New Patcher Bugs and Issues

As mentioned on the home page, a new patcher is available which will become mandatory in a week.

This thread is for reporting bugs and issues with the new patcher.

If you're having a problem with the patcher downloading files, please post the contents of the sodpatcher.log file (found in the same directory you put sodpatcher.exe in), the exact messages you are seeing, and the exact sequence that is getting you to the error.

Note: If it seems to be downloading older versions of files, please try clearing your Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files cache.

It will let me patch and everything but when i click to start the game it runs the regular ********* game not shards of daLAYA.

any ideas why it might be doing this?

:monocle:

Are you using EQW? Do you have either the "Run Patch Program" or "Play on Test Server" checkboxes set? What is your executable location set to? Make sure it is eqgame.exe, not *********.exe.

One very minor bug to report. If the .log file extention is not registered the "View Log" button fails (no other negative effect on the application).

OK, now I'm getting the necro pet bug, so I assume I'm not getting the right patch. I downloaded the patcher again a few minutes ago, and my patcher reads "SoD Patcher version 1.61" - but Lynettell's screenshots show version 1.13. Here's my log file:

Starting SoD Patcher version 1.61 at 11/13/08 - 23:37:19
Retrieving patcher CRC.
Loading server file list from http://www.shardsofdalaya.com/patcher2/patchlist.php
Loading local file list from C:\Program Files\*********\\sodfiles.txt

I dunno, I'm getting the new patcher from the right page, creating new shortcuts for it on my desktop, pointing to the right directory ... I should be good. I don't get it.

p.s. It also was continually asking me if I wanted to download a new version. Must have done that about 4-5 times. Would always get a "new" version, then restart, and let me into the game.

p.p.s. I just went back to the 1.55 patcher - saved an old copy. Same thing, though. Asked me again if I wanted to update, I said no ... /shrug

So... I just now tested the new patcher from Linux using Wine. While the application works ok, it has a couple issues:

First, Patch and Run - this has to be replaced. Let's make patching a separate operation from running, ok. When you attempt to 'run' eqgame.exe in this manner you end up with broken processes and no actual game.

Second issue: Permissions. This is the huge difference between Linux and Windows. Windows for all intents and purposes, practically ignores file permissions. Linux otoh, makes a huge stink about them. I have to run the patcher as root, which, while not being an overly nice thing, I'd really not be able to think of a way around it anyways even if I did write my own native patcher - only difference I could make is make sure the patcher was more verbose than 'you can't do that'.

I'm able to get around the first issue by simply killing off the dead processes and then starting the game the way I always used to. Getting around the second issue isn't particularly difficult either, but I don't much like the idea of running the patcher as root. However, as previously mentioned, I'm going to have to just live with having to run the patcher as root.

My suggestion to correct the first issue is simple enough: make a checkbox where you can select to run automatically after patching is finished. Unchecked, the patcher simply exits when finished patching, checked, the patcher runs the game after patching.

Patch&Run... Can do. It's using windows commands to run the executable... I'll look at other ways to do it as well to see if there's a better solution.

Permissions: just make all the EQ files writable by whatever account you want to run the patcher as. root has write access to everything, but there should be no problem running it as another user if that user has write permissions on the files.

well, yes. it is also possible to just give my user full read/write/execute access to my windows drives... but that's not a good idea at all. I could also copy the data onto my users home directory, but that'd be a waste of hard drive space.

So, what am I, chopped liver?!

Still asking me to update the patcher when I fire it up, but at least I'm not still getting the necro pet bug. I"ll see if it asks me the next time I log in.

Well, the necro pet bug was answered in the thread you linked, and you said you reverted to an old version, which will of course tell you there's a newer version available.

Update. If it's successful, you shouldn't be prompted next time. If you are, post again.

OK, looks like I'm good. It didn't ask me to update when I logged in just, so all is well. Thanks!

One very minor bug to report. If the .log file extention is not registered the "View Log" button fails (no other negative effect on the application).

This should be fixed. If there's no handler for the .log extension registered then it will open it with "notepad.exe" manually. If you don't have notepad, I don't know what else it should do. =P

My suggestion to correct the first issue is simple enough: make a checkbox where you can select to run automatically after patching is finished. Unchecked, the patcher simply exits when finished patching, checked, the patcher runs the game after patching.

Checkbox in. It doesn't exit (so you can see the status of patching), but from there you can click Exit instead of having to kill the process.

Very minor annoyance, and probably unfixable due to it being an EQW thing... on old patcher, it hid the Windows bar at the bottom. You'd have to hit Windows key to see the bar, what you had open, etc. I actually liked it that way. Now the bar is there the whole time.

Running old patcher, hides it. Running new patcher (other client), shows it. As I said, minor.

I know, and that's what I'm doing now. Issue is (if you read other posts) I play on other comps, that others have access too. I never had to remember to turn it on/off before.

As I said, minor, if fixable, fine, if not, then I'll keep hiding.
