When it comes to tanking Adept's or high hitting boss mobs what do you guys use?

Dual Wield
Dual Wield then switch to Shield
Shield

I can see a lot of agro problems with just the shield technique.

Is there any math to what mitigation increase a 25AC shield or a 40AC shield would give you?

If you're a warrior, I think 99.9999999% of the time you will lose aggro if using a shield unless that shield procs some sort of massive hate often...

As a warrior before the raid game you want to do the starfalls. Boots from that proc a +hate (Boots of Spite iirc) and get a good offhand that also procs +hate. I have heard charisma helps taunt land but cannot confirm it.

Using a shield is great for AC and block but you will definitely lose agro. If you were an Aux tank it would be great as a warrior so you can /shield the MT and adsorb some of the damage though.

The other Starfall reward is a 2hs with an AoE proc, it's not too usefull. I'm pretty sure that CHA doesn't do anything for taunt, but it will help your procs get resisted less.

You're just going to have to use dual wield the whole time, I think.

That proc was changed to single target a couple years ago.

From the perspective of a tier 4-5 warrior (using Woldaff's categorization), I still have to dual wield the entire fight to keep aggro. I've tried switching to using a shield for more mitigation around 25%, but still lose aggro. I have not yet seen a hate-procing shield through this tier.

I've seen higher tier warriors state they can switch to a shield half way through and maintain aggro, but cannot confirm this myself.

As Danku pointed out, if you're a Ramp Tank or Aux Tank using a shield and /shielding the MT is a great benefit, but you won't be using one as the MT for quite a while.

This is true but this wasn't really possible on most fights until IP level, before then there are not many encounters where I found myself able to use a shield.

In all honesty though around the adept tiers I don't think it would be possible unless given a lot of time to establish agro which isn't really a good idea, so I think that you are going to be stuck using dual wield.

Thanks for the responses.

Is it worth using Boots of Spite of Warpmetal Boots (+6ac augmented)?
[Warpmetal has 8 more AC but 5 less dex then the Boots of Spite]

Or should I be using the boots situationally? (i.e. During Groups or Adepts)

If you're having aggro issues, use the Boots of Spite. If you weren't, I'd go with the Warpmetal for the AC. Dex is way down on the list of priorities for a warrior behind AC, HP, agi, and sta.

Especially after the recent parses I saw with a big increase in dex (no link to the actual thread at the moment)...dex is garbage as far as the physical stats go. The difference with or without a shaman dex buff is negligible from what those parses showed.

I would use Boots of Spite if you anticipate having trouble holding aggro for sure. Otherwise, ditch them and double aug a set of Warpmetal boots (or buy some Stalker Chitin Boots for the big ac/sta).
