Nazi related images

Nazi related images are never well received. I've had a recent happening that directly relates to this.

So, I FINALLY get my RL friend (that played live with me) to play SoD. He starts an enchanter, I show him the changes, he starts leveling, he has questions, I show him WIKI, Forum ETC.

Today, after work, I stop by to see him and how stuff is going in game. He asks me "WTF is up with all the Nazi shit on the forum? The F'ing Mod on the board had Nazi Shit in her avatar. WTF kind of people run this game? I don't know about playing this game"

It may be a joke or whatever, and some people might know it BUT it gives an image and in this case a VERY bad image.

Personally, I think its distasteful. Also, how do you not expect drama to come with this?

Okay so your friend is very easily offended, sucks to be him.

It's kind of awkward to make this my first post on these forums, but whatever.

Every single forum in existence deals with users calling their administration team Nazis. Or at least, all of them I've been to, which is a considerable number. What's odd here is, when the Administration turns it around, the Users cry foul. If a user-base as a whole can make those kinds of comparisons, then they damn well better turn the other cheek when a mod or two does the same. Turn-about is fair-play, right?

Also, this is the greatest smiley image ever: :psyduck:

And finally, in summary, I am insulted that Nepentheia's avatar is a leet. Those things were really lame, and I say that as a froob. :D

*growls, bearing her leety fanglings* u suxxor

If I were an agent, I'd probably love leets. Sadly, +200 concealment is of little aid to an Advy, you know?

Reets are pretty awesome, though.

Aside from users taking offense (which you apparently don't care about) you may want to take your other game into consideration on this point. I read that you have sought out investors and are planning on making it a "monthly fee" based deal. Obviously, you will want to market that game in order to see a return on your investment. This board is associated with that game. This isn't meant to criticize or be a marketing lesson, but it would suck to put alot of hard work (and money) into a game and it have a poor reception due to something like this (even though it isnt malicious). Like I said, I'm not trying to criticize or be pedantic, just food for thought.

Edit: I say this because we all know how fickle the public is. Especially people in the U.S., who are conditioned to be repulsed or afraid of those types of images.

You are meshing SoD with Dawntide, when in fact they are 2 completely unrelated entities, one operated under a corporation, the other run by volunteers.

I doubt anything so petty as the signature of a moderator would affect any decisions consumers will make.

I said that this board is associated with that game. Thats how I learned about it, there are links in this forum to Dawntide's and vice versa. From what I've read Wiz is responsible for both games? Maybe I misunderstood.

If someone went to WoW's forums as a user and posted an image like that it would be promptly removed and the user would face consequences. They certainly would not allow mods to post such images. The reason is that consumers would make choices based on such things. Just as they wouldn't allow a player to create a char named Hitler with a guild called Third Reich. It turns people off. Hypotheticals aside, thats why NBC lost millions of dollars in adverstising revenue after Don Imus made his jokes. Nobody marketing a product (in the U.S. anyway) wants it to be anyway associated with racism or whatever ism. Except maybe Nascar.

The key word is association.

I generally don't test the forums before I play games, firstly. Secondly, the keyword is context. In context, the signature is just a joke, and an obvious one. In context, Don Imus' comments were racist.

I don't feel conditioned, repulsed, or afraid... Do any of you guys feel conditioned, repulsed, or afraid?

Hell, very few people in the states give a damn about the swastika unless someone paints it on the side of their building. And then they just think "Damnit, now I have to paint the building," unless they feel they've been targeted for some reason (ie, racial tension).
Neither Nazism nor Nazi symbols are illegal here. Theres a couple American nazi/facist political parties (very tiny ones). I knew a few kids who had a Nazi club in my high school (most of them were nice guys just doing it for the rebel/shock factor, though a couple were serious).

In other words, I'm not a sheep. But thanks for trying to protect my feelorz.

Im both repulsed and afraid at my avatar. I hereby campaign it be changed at once, and furthermore blanket everyone else into this revision.

If your avatar doesnt contain atleast 3 of the following:

Pink
Bunnies
Kittens
Flowers
Puppies
Smiling

Then you may not have an avatar at all.

Not in favour of this. Go and think about what you have proposed, once enlightened you may come back.

Sweet mine is safe!

In either context, the swastiska means the same thing. It is still used by hate groups all over the world. Context can't be determined when the image is seen on a forum in a thread about the best DPS class. It just looks like someone is advocating Nazism. Not everyone is so forum savvy to get the joke.

Really? Would you wear a shirt with a large swastika on it through the mall, or out to a restuarant. I'd wager you would get your share of dirty looks. It has nothing to do with being a sheep. In school we learn about WWII and the nazis, they don't teach about the history of such symbols. When most people see that, they know exactly what it is, what it meant, who it represented. Do you live in an all white neighborhood or city? I live in Ohio, near Cincinnati. Driving out in the rural areas (read all white) you might see some stuff like that. But if someone flew a nazi flag in downtown Cincinnati they might not make it out of the city. It is a threatening symbol.

I understand what you guys are saying, just not why.

I didn't post here to attack the mods or the users, I am personally not offended by it, just food for thought as I said in the first post I made. I understand that you want to defend this board, but I'm not trying to attack anyone. It's just conversation, put my words in whatever context you want and flame on.

I wouldn't, but I could, and not feel threatened. A few people might be offended. When I was 16 I ran around my high school with a picture of Rommel and a swastika after a history class and no one got really cared except one Jewish girl. And no, this is not an all white area. Not nearly. Its somewhere near 37% black. America is pretty jacked up, but this isn't one of those areas its jacked up in.

Cleary my avatar needs more pink.

You're wrong. Let's consider the target audience here, first of all. I can guarantee you that the vast majority of users here are familiar with forum-jargon. The word "nazi" here simply doesn't hold the same meaning. So again, within context, the use of Nazi images and symbolism means something entirely different.

How can you see a swastika on My Little Pony and not think it's a joke?
