Naming Policy...

Rambler

Dalayan Beginner
Am I the only person who doesn't get the big deal about the whole thing? I had my name changed from Rambler, to Ramblo, and personally could care less. I realise it's more frustrating for higher levels to have their name changed, but that's why you read the rules first.

Two of the guys in my guild thus far have had their names changed, and also complained, I didn't get that either. I'm not attacking Burner here with this post, if someone conjures up that thought. Just asking an open ended question. By the way, both of the guys who got their names changed, one just re rolled because he was pissed off so much, and the second logged off and came back with a new name. Luckily, the GM was nice enough to then change it again. But, I really don't think you guys should have to put up with that. I respect authority I guess, perhaps I'm one of the last.

I think I post too much. It's a bad habit, and one I find hard to break.

I'm just shocked -- shocked, I say -- to know that I guy who goes by rambler posts too much.

Shocked.

I had a char changed from Indiyen (erudite SK -- I didn't even realize the implication) to "naming_violation_01".

I was pissed off when it got changed to iniyen. naming_violation_01 fucking rocks.

i got confused trying to figure out what your exact question was or what side you were on, but i'll give my POV.

i think the naming policy is one of the things that makes WR great, or the enforcement of it rather. I hate unoriginal names. names like "Blade TheSwordmaster" or "Aragorn" or "Ted TheodoreLogan", to me, flag the person as having little imagination and not being into the roleplaying aspect of a roleplaying game. not even enough to come up with a decent name for their character. I can could care less if the name you come up with is stupid sounding, so long as it is original.

were i a GM i would be hated indeed. I personally think it's underenforced, as some members of WR "high society" (65+ and have been that way for some time) have names that i would definitely think violate the policy, but i have a feeling will never be changed. i'm not calling anyone out, nor could I, as i can't remember them off hand.

I agree... WR has the best enforcement of naming policy around. I can't count how many name violated the naming policy on EQLive, but it was a pathetic amount. It seemed for every true original name created 100 unoriginal were spawned afterwards.

I would be classified as a 'name police' and I bear no ill to being that. MMORPG's is what a roleplaying game is supposed to be about, originality... Its not that hard to come up with a name, and for those that say its not easy... Well they aren't using much of their imagination... To them I say log off and go play diablo or something and leave the roleplaying to those who really want it...

And to those GM's who are doing their jobs... Kudos to you all!

That's not clear? :) I'm crazy.

I think he/she means what this post is for. Why you started it.

But, as for my opinion, I love the naming policy. From what I heard about live servers and the names people make...I wouldn't even bother playing it if that were the case. I came from really hardcore RPing in NWN's before EQ, so all names I ever encountered were made-up. I personally prefer that because since you get X amount of levels like everyone else, and then you get X amount of AAs....which is possible the same AAs that another person of your class will get...your name is going to be your originality, so why not make it up and not a name that will make you unique. It's not hard. I got really used my my first character's name, it doesn't break policy, but I don't get attached to it...nothing wrong with starting something different or new. :)

GMs keep up teh work

if that was your question then i would have simply responded "No." It seemed like you are pro-naming policy, but then some things you said were a little open ended, not really clear on who you were talking to / about so i was confused as to whether you were pro-naming policy or not. that's all. and i had to assume you wanted to know what everyone else thought.

so yeah, you're crazy. :p

I probably shouldn't reply, but hey--Why not?

Personally, I would love more than to change all of the names I think are rather obvious. (Apperently I'm the only one who sees them as obvious, but eh.) I won't name any names, because then that'll start up drama from here till the END OF TIME time time time time... But, you all know who you are. YOU ALL KNOW.

The end.

I say screw people who try to back up how they got their name. You violated the naming policy and there shouldn't be any leniency for anyone.

Violate the naming policy, you deserve to have your name changed without your consent.

Your name was changed from Rambler to Ramblo? Hahahaha, the second is far worse in my humble opinion; too similar to Rambo <3

Which is why I didn't think it would work, but for some reason it did. Rambler is obviously a word we use in every day life. Ramblo is no. Rambo is simply a movie... While I realise most think that's where it comes from, it's just what the dudes on postfarm.net called me sometimes, and I was scraping for names when the Kas came and pwned me (changed my name, which I didn't mind at all). Although here I am telling everyone where my name comes from. I offered Rambley, which technically isn't anything even remotely close to Rambler / Rambo, but Kas was nice and let me have Ramblo.

Oh, I was much appreciative of the whole ordeal. The GMs aren't out to get you, they're just supporting the community. Arguing with them is the worst possibly thing you could do in the situation of a name change, and I don't see why anyone does it.

Almost done rambling...

I too agree with the naming policy and am glad it is enforced... hopefully none of mine will get changed. Far, far too many of the names allowed on live just flat-out sucked. Admittedly, it was somewhat prejudiced on my part, but quite often I found I would have nothing to do with players that had the bonehead names (you've seen 'em - Herekittykitty, Scullyxfile, Leegollas, Spiketv, etc.).

I did have a troll once who's name was changed, but he really did violate everything - his name was Hoodafok. I was surprised he lasted 10lvls on live... hehe!

Characters I have on WR? I hope they survive...

Yahtz (formerly Yahtzooba Boom), gnome wiz
Bahtook Twelvebeers, troll shaman
Caspus Curr, gnome mage
Piely Contagious, human necro

Yahtz, wiz reborn
