Mining Gemstones

In Dalaya, there are hundreds of different gemstones, all running around, waiting to be looted by greedy players everywhere. These stones had to come from somewhere, but where? Alongside the ability to mine ore, should be that to mine gemstones as well. A separate skill that, as trained allows you the chance at getting better and better stones. Maybe you can only mine lapis at first, or jasper or malachite, but slowly, as your skill improves, the chances at getting say an emerald or a ruby increase. Special tools like a pickaxe for mining chunks of rock, and a sifter thing as a container. Add your rock, and a flask of water to the sifter, shake it about, and see what you get!
 
I like this idea... I wouldn't make it another skill though... Just add a slight chance that when mining you get a gem...

Unfortunately w/being able to mine gems the prices would have to go down a whole lot, I'd assume so much that it would just make them trash loot. In addition (unless they were made incredibly rare finds) there would be huge issues w/jcing.
 
Not neccesarily. They'd have to be factored out of the loot tables a fair bit, less NPC drops and such, but ultimately, with the right ratios for each different type of stone, the price wouldn't really be affected.
 
Yeah, JCing is designed around obtaining the gems from mobs or purchasing from merchants/players. I'm not ruling out the possibility of very special use gemstones coming from mining in the future but it's very unlikely you'll see current gems come from mining in any form.
 
This idea is actually alot more doable/sensible now with the new mining system. you could have a sieve as a container and combine the trash rocks we now get with maybe a hammer and flask of water to get a chance of returning a gem. the rates and which gems honestly are beyond my knowledge to be able to make a suggestion. even if it was made rediculously rare so that it's only worth it to those that enjoy a cheap trade skill would bother.
 
Actually I read another post that asked if they could have a random gem thrown in with the mining. That way if you are mining ore there is a chance that you might get a gem in the process.
