What We Want-

We are looking for an artist to draw a map of the Shards of Dalaya game world. This map will be used mainly in promotions but also may be used as our new loading screen.

The map should be hand drawn OR stylized to look hand drawn. We are looking for something reminiscent of the old cloth maps that you used to get when you purchased an MMO. A few examples of what we are looking for:

Example 1 - Credit to Verant

Example 2 - Credit to Mythic

Keep in mind we want the vibrancy to be similar to the first example.

The Contest -

If you feel you are a capable enough artist we ask that you submit a small demonstration of your work to Waldoff(AT)gmail(DOT)com. The demonstration can be as large or small as you see fit but understand that it should be some sort of fantasy map as displayed above.

On June 25th we will select one artist and contact them to complete the entire map. The map will include Faydwer, The Old World, Frostfang, Erudin and Ikisith.

The Rewards -

Everyone who submits a demonstration will receive some fame and have their work published *as long as the mapping is of SoD origin*. This means if you want to do Athicab as your small demo we will publish it even if you do not win and extend you fame for it.

The grand winner will get the title "the Cartographer" upon being selected to draw the map. After the map is completed he or she will be able to change the title to one of their choice or keep the Cartographer. Alternatively the title equivalent of 1000 fame can be substituted.

Important Note -

Shards of Dalaya will be granted the full rights to all aspects of the submission as a work-for-hire in exchange for the prize mentioned above. Portfolio rights are retained by the artist.

Good luck! This thread is open to questions.

Can the map be like an already drawn map (let's say world's map) with just the cities and zones renamed?

Wow, i still dream about that 1st map.

It was 1999, my friend just bought EQ and i always went to his house to play it. I always kept what and where I would go as soon I start the game.

Was incredibly how into the game I was. Altho I never started playing on it. Ultima Online got me! :(

A zone connection map posted in this thread would be helpful if anyone has a link. I think alot of players are still under the assumption that the zones line up the same way that they did on live.

When we pick the artist they will be provided with all the information they need.

The demo can be a single city or continent or w/e.

A few of these have existed, and I think fame was given in exchange, but the ones posted in the must-have website thread are a bit outdated now.

The ones on the Wiki should be good enough - you arent going to draw in every single zone name. It should be a generalized overview of the gameworld.

Ohh, this sounds like fun, definitely going to try this... the biggest problem for the artists I feel is getting the geography in their head to fit in with what everyone else thinks it looks like.

*damn, only 2 posts and I registered in may 2007... I need to lurk less and post more

Hmm... If I can find enough time between work, school, family, and SoD, I might try to make something for this.

cool contest!!! but i completely concur with yaemz above ^

granted, the "demonstration" will be easier to do, the deadline is still super small .... especially for those of us with a busy schedule in the upcoming weekend/week

i am really interested, but the time is almost too tight...

Sounds fun, I'll see what i can do for you. (not a good artist but i dabble, Bob Ross FTW!!)
Also, did you have a general layout of the game world as you'd like it? should it look like pangea or separated continents?

I hate to say it but having some idea of SoD geography from playing is a pretty huge plus in the contest.

im not sure what the end-goal is with this map, but i think it would be pretty awesome if it were linked on the main site and made into an interactive flash map with a lot of the info that can be found on the wiki; adjacent zones, level ranges, fancy glowing borders, etc... i think a lot could be done with this to make it really cool. if i had any skill with flash id volunteer, but anyway, just a thought :p

A flash interactive map would be a bigger time commitment depending on the complexity, but it's definitely doable.

Everfrost is the last zone considered Old World. The single passage through the North Everfrost Range is the passage to frostfang

Has this been closed / announced yet, or can I retract my 10 minute crappy demo and do a better one if the deadline has been postponed?

Guessing contest is closed? i didn't see before but would like to submit something if the deadline has been pushed forwards
