I was mulling over how to intertwine roleplaying into SoD, and came up with an interesting concept. Honestly, I'm not sure how feasible it is, but it would certainly take a lot of time and effort invested to make it work out. It's just a fun idea
The plan would be to place scrolls in the game that are dropped randomly, or even bought from an obscure merchant somewhere (A particular merchant might only carry one and have little knowledge of it, something maybe a traveler sold to them for RP purposes). They would be illegible to players. The basis for the idea would be the implementation of a few (or maybe just 1) other languages into the game, even if it's only in written form. Many of the scrolls would be gibberish or simply unimportant, but the player would be able to speak to a few select nps who would help them with the translation. In some way or another, the player would need to invest time and gain skill ups in that language. It would clearly need to take some serious investment of time to gain the appropriate levels. Some scrolls, however, would have clues or information about a certain event, such as one of Kaezul's right hand men or lieutenants occupying a fairly untraveled zone for a short period of time searching for something or an artifact being transported by the evil army. I'm not sure how the timing would work for it, maybe an important scroll being successfully translated could trigger the event in a set period of time (likely a few days)? Anyway, the player would then have the opportunity to muster support to attack them. The language skills could even be level-dependant, so that a level 20 character could possibly only translate an easier scroll that would closer fit their abilities.
I thought it seemed like a good way to progress the story in some way and maybe even give the players the ability to leave their mark in some way. Even if it didn't have such an important role, it would be another fun treasure map-like adventure. Lemme know whatcha think <3
