[MAGIC ITEM]

The [MAGIC ITEM] tag does next to nothing in Shards of Dalaya. Its one use, to my knowledge, is a holdover from Live as a means of determining whether or not a given weapon can hit "magical" creatures (a rather arbitrary category including ghouls, wisps, etc.). Never have I heard this come up as an issue in game; never has a beginner said in OOC something along the lines of, "Aw, I better find a magic weapon or I won't be able to hunt wisps!" Many players are probably unaware of this property in the first place. Moreover, the tag seems to do nothing whatsoever for armor, quest pieces, and so on.

From an in-universe perspective, it might make sense to refer to a piece of armor as a magic item if, say, it grants its user strength, but as a matter of practicality, the tag is so overwhelmingly commonplace that it may as well not even exist. [MAGIC ITEM] seems to be assigned ad libitum, or so it seems. Tradeskills illustrate the point very well. A Drakehide Tunic and a Cougarskin Tunic are regarded as magic while the Hopper Hide Shirt is not, despite that the latter grants stat boosts and shares their trivial value of 190. If there is a rhyme or reason to this item tag, it eludes me.

In the interests of being economical, I move that the [MAGIC ITEM] tag be dispensed with, if not for current items, at least for all those to come, and that the category of magical creatures simply be done away with.

...unless, of course, I'm missing something?

Certain mob types did indeed used to have the requirement of needing magical weapons to hit them because I remember raiding Plane of Valor and doing 0 damage because I had non-magical arrows. That being said, it seems the requirement for magic weapons was disabled slightly over 1 year ago, so the [MAGIC ITEM] tag currently does not serve any purpose.

yeah you still cant kill ghosts with a rusty broadsword

One reason why I thought it might be helpful to eliminate this tag is that Eisley mentioned in this post that there was some problem involving item tags not showing correctly in cases where there are too many tags assigned to them. Does this problem still persist or has it been worked around?

I'm sure there were also difficulties from the making of the tags [BIND ON EQUIP] and [PRISTINE]. Just removing [MAGIC ITEM] altogether to make space for something else makes a lot of sense to me. I'm sure any dev would love to be able to make use of the apparent data slot.

that would be so helpful, especially in ikisith... but i imagine it taking days and days to tag everything...

Unless a script could be written referencing every item that exists in a quest script and applying the tag.... if that's possible

I thought about this but it would target quest rewards as well. Not a big deal but could make things confusing.
