Longer Boat dockage

I would like to see a longer docking time for boats, at least in the cities. I have longer zone times on an older pc and by the time i 'zone' into town/dock, the boat has arleady rezoned out of zone with me. This makes it very hard to get across the oceans without a port. I understand if this is not possible, but i think it would greatly improve playablity with boats if they docked for a few minutes.. have a chance to catch the boat when it gets in.. ample time to 'zone' and get off boats.
Thanks in advance.

Ouch, I feel your pain. I was stuck that way in-between Freeport and Butcherblock in The Game for longer than I care to remember. Didn't help that when petitionning for help, the only answer I got was "it can't happen". *grumbles*

Honestly though, for that to happen, you have to be playing on a *very* old computer with very little RAM (at least RAM was the culprit for my problem). Is adding RAM an option? It'd be good, not just for playing but for doing about anything on your comp.

the boat zones., sits for 4 minutes, then moves for 2 minutes, docks for 2 minutes, and moves back to zone for 2 minutes.

If it takes you 10 minutes to zone, you have something else going on, it's not your old PC. A 400mhz p2 with 64mb of ram and a 16mb vid card on aol dial up zones in less than 3 minutes.

Hm, I'm gonna look at my log tonight and see how quickly the boat moves through the Storm Sea (or whatever it's called between Erud and the mainland. 10 minutes seems longer than I was on the boat last night.

That being said, I can't imagine the OP having trouble getting off the boat by the time s/he zones. I mean, I'm using a PIII-800 with 512 MB of RAM, and I zone pretty slowly, compared to my much newer laptop with a P4-2.3 GHz processor and the same amount of RAM. DSL helps, I guess, but, it does sound like something else is going on here.

Internet connects plays a big role in your zone time from what I have seen. I went from dial up to cable on Live and my zone times were alot faster than when I was on dial up.

Yeah, I understand. I've just also noticed that my old machine zones (and loads the game) much more slowly than my (company) laptop with a modern processor and (probably faster) RAM.

And midrange computers in 1999 played this game and zoned in less than 3 minutes while on AOL 3.0 Dialup. If your computer is older than that, or has an even slower internet connection, then you have no business in online games more intensive than LAN Hearts. You certainly have no business suggesting a game be modified to the deteriment of all others for the benefit of yourself.

People who take FOREVER to zone have that problem because they infected their machine with various internet nasties. Or, they have a 1999 midrange using 2002 high end settings. Or, their pc is on the cusp of thermal shutdown. Any way, user problems.

And, thanks for the information that faster computers are... faster. I do hope that particular theorum can be considered proven and we can get back to the pressing matters of the 10 minute (yes, my examples are somewhat exxagerated) load times. Marlow's breath, how do you play? Do you pick one zone a night to play in?

Hey, I run two clients on a 56k connection and travel fine on the boats. You definitely are having problems with you computer. My friend had an old PC with plenty of RAM, video power, etc.. but his hard drive was slow. I bet that's your problem.

As for changing boat docking times, if 1 in 500 people have problems with boats, it's probably best to keep the boats moving fast and satisfy those 499 people rather than make them slower and make everyone else suffer. Kapeesh?

=ex=

I remember having very long loading and zoneing times after I reinstalled windows once. Reason was that DMA for FDDs was deactivated by default. Checking that is worth a try, zoneing after activating speeded up by ~factor 4.

What huh? I'd be interested in checking it out, too, if I had any idea what you were talking about! :(

Thanks for the input.. 10 minutes does seem like plenty of time.. i'll have to see how long it takes me to zone when on boat, i normally zone in a few minutes most, but have alot of problems with boats,.. mostly i'll crash when boating into city which will take even longer to get back on.. it's probably just a pc issue, im running cable and my internet speeds are good, 128ram which sucks.. but it's true i never had a problem with my old 64ram/dial-up on live and this comp is better,so.. *shrug* oh well, i'll upgrade one of these days..

Yeah, I'd like to know how to do that myself. Since installing XP zone times are long.

Game settings also has under (Options) and past the new/old model choices to have (Texture Cache).

It says that the first time after it is turned on that you zone in you will take longer but after that you will reduce zone time. Perhaps this would be a good way to help yourself a little?

if zoning time is a huge problem you can also disable your maps. this will cut zone times down a great deal. found this out by accident when trying to load up/delete old world mapes and get new SoD. this might help you. yours hason the warrior

I disagree with this. I heard about it in ooc one night and decided to give it a try. There was no noticeable change in zone speed or crash frequency.
