Login loop

Okie, so I was playing this game a lot a long time ago, then my computers power supply crapped out on me and had to order a new one, only to find out a month later that they shipped it to TEXAS! (I live in Illinois) and some idiot down there signed for it. So Gateway had to reship another one to us. Anyway, I guess my point is this: It's been a long time since I last played.

Now, when I opened up the WR patcher it did it's thing and took me to the EULA like normal, I went through the login screen and to the server select. I chose the server and told it to go. The window tries to resize then bumps back to the EULA, so I go through it again and it crashes at the server select screen this time. If I restart the program, it will first loop me to the EULA then crash. Same every time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is some information about what's goin' on and what I've tried, might help to narrow down the problem:

- I am using EQ Windows

- I am running XP

- I am not using a router (I'm on satellite, directly connected to my pc)

- I have firewalls up (2 of them) I've tried it with both up, both down, and every other combination possible. Didn't help.

- I've reinstalled the game and all of it's files (everything from the WR site as well: Hot fix, eqwindows, etc)

- I followed the site exactly word for word

- I did not do the EQLive update to the new dragons or omens of war things.

- I have both the original files and the reinstalled files, so as to makes sure I didn't screw anything up

- Does the same thing if I disable window mode, too

Okie, so that's about all I could think of. Sorry that it's so excessive, but I just think it's best that I give you the whole whammy up front.

Thanks!

[Edit: Thought of even another thing to add on to the list, sorry  ]

When you first wen through EQ setup - what settings did you use for video? and if you didnt make these settings - go to Options on the login screen and check the video settings - maybe try adjusting them to a lower setting just to see.

the options menu after the EULA? I unchecked all the video options and put the texture settings to low. 'twas a no go

Well <insert stream of colorful words> I found the problem. It's my satellite. I connected to my dial-up and it worked just fine.

So now my next question is, why is my satellite not allowing to to work? I'm on 2-way, which sucks for these games, but I have no choice in it, my dial-up will be gone within the week.

So if we could just fix this problem, that'd be great.

Yeah, I'm gonna get off for the night. I'm all depressed now. I just realized that I'm gonna hafta give up all my online games 'cause of this satellite due to the damned latency.

But I still wanna know why my satellite is stopping the game from going!

I am not sure on that. I know I had a friend that used to play EQ on Satellite (though he had download only, uploaded via modem) fine.

When you get the chance - you might try further searching the web for this. Im too tired to do this myself - but tomorrow I might have more energy for it. I would sincerely doubt that two-way satellite would be so bad that you cant game with it at all.

Latency on two way satellite is notorious for being bad if not impossible for gaming.

Thx info. Never really researched satellite (specially two-way) and never known anyone to use it - but that sucks (thinking that dialup would give better gaming performance over anything...

well... i had a 2 way direcway sat for a year..

during that time, i didnt play hardley any game, due to the latency..

from my experiance, the server is probably timeing out on you...

think of it this way... the FASTEST your going to get a ping is going to be somewhere around 850ms that 0.85 seconds... now, with latency, and larger packets, your ping times will be pushing 1500 - 2000 ms.. yes.. 1.5 - 2.0 seconds.. sometimes slower..

your not gong to be able to play any online game with that.. . stuff will rubber band everywhere...

the reason your ping time is so bad, and your latency is so high is because of where the sat is located... for North America, the companies put up a stationary orbital sat, that is over the equator, and pointing toward the us, makeing an oval, covering most of the lower 48, and parts of canada (hense the reason you point it south)

now.. the satelites used in the UK, and most of EU, are 'localized' (this is what most governments use to communicate) they are basically low orbit stationary sats, that are directly above the land mass... the ping times for those are closer to 'normal' more abouts 100 ms..

now, from what i remember, if your running just about any firewall, and are useing a direct connect to the sat, you are probably slowing down the connection even more.. if not stopping it..

direcway had a HUGE compatabily problem with virus softwares, and most firewall software.. something to do with thier own software... /shrug

wow. i'm going on way to long.... basicallly.. you might be timeing out trying to connect to the server, hense the reason for the loop / crash...
if i wanted to play any online game, when i had the sat, i had to use my dial up..

not sure how much it is for you.. but I paid an upfront $600 for the hardware.. and like $60 a month for the service...

Hey! Yeah, I have 2-way Direcway, as well. I was playing World of Warcraft when my mum decided she was getting this satellite and we're paying 60 a month for the satellite, yeah. I tried it on WoW and I was running a steady 1200 latency, very BAD for pvp. (took my pally about second and a half to start casting heal, not good, not good at all) Anyway, I would LOVE to just get 1-way, but that ain't gonna happen any time in the near future. Pity, ain't it? We'd get DSL or cable but we live out in the boonies and they don't reach that far, makes my rather.... mad, to put it politely.

So, if anyone could tell me an online game that I could play somewhat well with this satellite or could give me the name of a DSL/cable company that serves the boonies, I would be eternally in your debt.

Thanks for all the help!
