Locking up at char selection screen.

Hi all.

I did not see anything anywhere about this problem specifically. If it is out there, I appologize in advance for not being able to find it.

Ok, my patcher seems to get stuck on the generalcommands.html. Seems like a common thing on this forum. However, I followed the instructions on how to manually patch the files. They don't seem to tell you exactly where to put the files though.... I put them in my everquest directory. The .zip file with the patch in it extracts with a very long directory structure though, I have a copy of the files in there too. At "location of your EQ installation"\var\www\sod\patcher\eq.

The next problem was what to use to launch the game if you do a manual patch. I saw some stuff on using a shortcut of eqgame.exe with patchme added to the command line. This gives a full screen game. I also have tried using the eqw.exe which seems to just run the game in a window.

With both of these methods of starting the game, I am able to login. Then I can select the server. Then at the character selection screen, I create a new char. There is the windows for race/class/face selection, help, stats, class description and there is a blank window in there that I can move around. I don't see anywhere where I can name my character. I can't remember where this was done back on live. There does seem to be a textfield above the race/class area with "Character" in it, but I am not able to select it or type there. If I pick my race and class, assign points and click Next, the whole thing freezes up and I get a window saying it seems my client has crashed and wants to send information to the developers.

Does anyone know the cause and solution of this problem?

Thank you for your help,
Del.

I have tried reinstalling the map files and the patch manually. I have an Intel dual core, just in case I tried setting it to run on just one core. That didn't seem to change anything.

I have tried telling the patcher to repatch everything, that still results in a patcher stuck at generalcommands.html.

Launching the game via eqw or "eqgame.exe patchme" still starts the game ok, but still locks up when I click the Next button at character creation. This is a bummer, I played Dalaya about 2 years ago on another computer with no problems.

Bad UI, maybe? I've had that problem before - you may need to edit your .ini file (heck if I remember which one, however) to tell the game to load the default UI.

Interesting. I did a quick check for a UI file and found UIErrors.txt. And it is pretty full too....

I think what you want to do is go into eqclient.ini, and change the "UISkin=" line to be default:

UISkin=Default

Then, you should be able to load the game. I think that's what i did when I had this problem, but I can't be sure. I could be completely wrong, of course.

I have tried reinstalling the map files and the patch manually. I have an Intel dual core, just in case I tried setting it to run on just one core. That didn't seem to change anything.

You definitely need to set affinity to only one processor, however. I don't know if that's going to help with locking up, however. Don't see anything in you eqclient.ini file, but there's a lot of stuff in there that I don't know exactly what it does.

Sorry, man, other than that I'm tapped out of ideas without being able to sit down at your machine. Good luck. Hopefully someone else with more experience will chime in.

Launching the game via eqw or "eqgame.exe patchme" still starts the game ok, but still locks up when I click the Next button at character creation.

Shouldn't be starting SoD through either. You should be using the SoD patcher...

Example, my path is C:\Program Files\EQSoD\sodpatcher.exe (EQSoD is my second folder with SoD info).

I have tried telling the patcher to repatch everything, that still results in a patcher stuck at generalcommands.html.

Delete your files.txt, then try the repatch.

Norton anti-virus software has been known to cause the issue you are having with the patcher.

Ok, I have tried deleting the files.txt but the patcher does not work. It seems like a very common problem on here. Mine always gets stuck at either the hashtable or generalcommands.html.

I am not running any antivirus software and I have tried turning off my firewall and removing my router by plugging my modem directly into my computer. I am still stuck with the same problem when I hit the Next button on the character select screen. But if I am not supposed to be starting the game by using eqw or the "eqgame.exe patchme" ( which is listed in either one of the stickies or the wiki btw) then I guess I am dead in the water.

With the patcher always getting stuck on generalcommands.html, I am stumped.

I think I have this problem licked now. Despite disabling my firewall software, it seems to leave a couple of processes running. By killing those I am able to run the patcher correctly now. Thank god for google :)

Thanks for the time guys, it is much appreciated. I have to say this is one of the few positive forum experiences I have had. Especially considering how long EQ and its emulation has been around.

Thank you again.

Interesting. Glad you were able to figure it out. Sorry I couldn't be of more help; don't know that I would have figured that out even if I was sitting in front of your machine.
