Just a little help...

Dalayan Beginner
I am having a fair bit of trouble on sticking with a class and am looking for some wisdom and guidance from the Veterans here lurking in the forums. I've spun the wheel and gotten a handful of classes to 20 or so, and enjoy them well enough (Paladin, Magician and Beastlord). But none of those classes really has me wanting to keep on pushing through those painful deaths or occasional stale grinds. Is it me? Should I just try grouping more? Or have I just yet to find that right fit?

I really enjoy grouping, but want to be able to occasionally stalk off on my own without having to worry about a 'tamed large rat' beating me senseless.

Thanks for any helpful suggestions you can leave.

Ps - I'm open to anything but Bard, I've read on their "solo factor" and running in circles would make me sick. :\

I find druid to be pretty fun in both groups and solo.

Healers are pretty much always welcome in a group, and if there are enough heals already druids can DPS with DoTs, DD & Charmed pets if there is a cleric). They also have a lot of spells that make soloing fun - either because you 1) win or 2) can run away if you've bitten off more then you can chew.

The class is also fairly gear independent, so you don't need to dump a bunch of plat into the character to feel like a badass. Additionally, SoW and ports make getting around the world a snap.

But yes, groups can be the most fun and typically earn xp at a faster rate.

Excellent! I will give the Druid a whirl. Thanks for the response. :)

Any other thoughts on some of the other classes out there? From all you other knowledgeable veterans? :D

I just lost a long post to you. So I will be brief.

Druid is a great choice, especially if you cannot afford to gear up your toon. Soloing, healing, porter. Lots of options and abilities. The druid is not the best at anything it does (except most damage from a DS on its relic) but it is the second or third best at many things. There are very few group encounters where a druid cannot heal.

Second, let me point out that leveling to 20 on a class is not going to give you a clear picture of the class at level 65. Beastlord and Paladin are my favorite two classes (druid being 3rd). Both are versatile being able to solo and group well. Of those two, if you can't afford to gear up, go with beastlord and use his bare fists for a long, long time.

But much depends on what you are trying to do. How much play time? Do you plan to mostly solo or group? Do you prefer melee, magic or both? Are you focused on having the best character for tier 11 raid zones? Or just EXP at level 65?

Thanks for the response, sorry you lost your initial one!

And I agree - I am sure I am not getting the full picture of said classes I've only gotten to 20ish, but enough that I know I want to explore a bit on other classes still.

As far as my playtime and intentions for end-game...

-I usually log an hour or few each day.
-I seldom look for groups, but don't have a preference either way.
-Tend to prefer a mix of both melee/magic.
-My goal is to be able to explore as much content as possible (casually).

Thanks again for all this help!

Tbh, bard sounds a lot like what you are looking for. I didn't really solo much, actually i duoed to 20 with my ranger kiting stuff which was pretty fun. But if you focus on what you are doing as a bard you can be extremely versatile in a group; it's also very easy to get from a to b with travel songs. In the end you'll end up being pretty tough wearing plate armour, and it's not out of the question to be able to tank mundane stuff as a bard. Soloing as a bard isn't exactly running in circles. I usually find a nice spot to run a good distance back and fourth so when i pass back on myself the song dot hits the mob/s again. Plus, you don't have to move as much as other kiters- bard speed +/ - snare on a mob = its not going to eat you any time soon. In my experience it's not hard to get a group as a bard.

That being said, Rangers are also very fun and can have a lot of uses. Root on a melee is very useful, snare, and bow dps (1-about 20ish bow damage is pretty good even with the most basic stuff, and it picks up again at about 50) make kiting pretty easy- you just snare something and walk backwards shooting. They also get a very good 'tank' stance which can help you to not die in bad situations.

The best soloers are probably Necromancers tho. I haven't played a necro, mage or wiz yet so i can't really say from experience; but as a shaman i have pretty good dots and can solo pretty well- necromancers have the best dots, very good mana regen, a better pet than a shaman and snare so i'm pretty sure thats a no brainer. However you're not really going to be meleeing as a necromancer. Kiting consists of either snaring and dotting and/ or using fear. They also have a lot of group utility; mez, FD splitting and other stuff.

My personal favourite probably has to be Cleric though. I first played a shaman, then a druid, and then i got to cleric and saw how ridiculously good the heals are. Clerics are tough, loved by the community and get a sick hammer of many procs at 56. By 65, you can do 'decent' dps just melee with a cleric. Of course they are pretty poor soloers unless you get a good DS/ gearz.

Have you considered boxing; this opens up a lot more doors for you especially if you don't have that much time to wait for groups to come along.

Bards can do lots of cool stuff, kiting is really easy (you won't feel sick) and you don't have to rely on mana. Rangers are fun to play, Necros are really good at soloing and Clerics are awesome.

Haha, Bran Jr??

I haven't really given Boxin' an honest chance either. Guess that would make a big difference in Gameplay huh?

Do Rangers require alot of twinking as they level? Or is it something I could do a-ok as an newbie to Dalaya? What else boxes well with them?

And that from someone who can't focus on a single class. I will just call you Bran Jr.

Dregonix is offended :dumbsad:

Rangers don't need that much twinking. Obsidian chainmail is pretty nice at first, and pretty cheap. wyrm/wyvern hide is something to aim for after that. Mithril weapons and then upgrade to warpmetal ones. From the 50's up you should start to save for imphide/ deepmetal chain and balance out slots for stats (i found damask leather tunic to be better than both for chest slot and cheaper too). There's a decent quest for a bow, http://wiki.shardsofdalaya.com/index.php/Voice_of_the_Centaur_Quest which you can do quite early on. The thurgadin/ starfall quest also gives you very nice items including a haste (12%)

As for something to box with a ranger, I'm swinging towards Shaman. Haste is important for a ranger, and shamans get very good dots- pair that with a ranger's snare and you have a nice kite. However, I warn you that shaman heals suck compared to druid/ cleric, the only plus side is that you will never run out of mana at 65 and you can put out some good dps. Druid + ranger would be nice but the ranger buffs would all go to waste. Cleric would also work, but shaman is the cheapest of the healers.

I don't really suggest boxing anything other than a healer, kiting is fun but slow and solid exping in dungeons gives faster exp. Also it's important to keep all your melee skills up whatever classes you choose- it's far easier to level them up as you level (usually 5-10 skill ups per level) than it is to get a really cool weapon at 65 and level up from 0.

Haha, Bran Jr??

Sorry about that confusion. Brandardo has many alts, many beginning with Bran such as Brantoo. Both Bran and Rusheeth are guildies, so any insults are purely in-house.

Rangers are not too hard to gear, if you are not tanking. I did the Ruby Hilted Longsword quest. And you need a good bow. I had a mage bot to make me arrows. You are gonna need to either make your own arrows (fletching) or get access to a toon that can summon nice arrows (mage or clicky).

One tip that I learned too late. It takes a long time to skill up archery. But, that is also one combat skill that you can train while dueling. So if you have an alt, get in duel mode and use him as your archery target. It still takes time, but it is easier than trying to hit an NPC who runs and hits on you.

My advice is to just play whatever is fun. It's not mandatory that you play one class to 65+ right away. If you have fun doing what you're doing, contiunue doing it. I will say that grouping is definitely more fun than soloing. If you can box though, a tank + healer means you have a group started already and you can just add whoever you want to the mix.

With only playing an hour a day though, you may want a solo class or a duo that can easily farm gear/money for your other characters. Druid/Mage or Druid/Necro isn't a bad option. Druid/Beastlord would be pretty decent also. If you only choose one of those classes though, any of them solo well. Beastlord would satisfy your melee and magic craving though. They also get some buffs that other classes like a whole lot.

Also... Bran has a lot of alts?

Some day we will have to compare our alt-peens and see who truly has the most! Though I kinda like not knowing...it keeps our relationship fresh and dangeorus.
