Item searching

What is the best way to research items for a specific slot? Say I am wanting to find highest ac for chest item for a class, or highest primary weapon ratio. I have used the wiki, but am stuggling with any type of sort functionality.

To my knowledge, the wiki has no search or filter functionality that will let you view only, say, Iksar Monk chest pieces with AC greater than or equal to 40. You can get pretty close with certain categories, however. These are the links found in the box at the bottom of an article. For instance, visit the Category:piercing skill items page to see all documented piercing weapons, look for the column marked "Ratio," and click the little black arrow next to it to arrange the entire category of piercing weapons from lowest to highest ratio (or vice versa). Of course, you'll still need to do a bit of scrolling back and forth to make sure the item that piques your interest is indeed usable by the class you're considering.

The server could probably get a fair bit of mileage out of a restrictive item search along the lines of the one at Allakhazam, at least when it comes to race/class/slot and min/max stat combinations. Most of the other parameters would be redundant because things like worn effects or the zone an item drops in are categorized in a pretty useful way already on the wiki.

(Believe it or not, the absolute best web-based item search I have ever found for Live items is hosted by MQEmulator, but posting the link would probably be in bad taste. :tinfoil: I used to refer to it when puttering around on GM-Command servers on EQEmu, as the in-game item search is pretty useless unless you know specifically what you're after!)

If, by some weird chance, you're looking specifically for the optimal set of buyable AC gear for tanks, you might find this thread handy. :)

Question about mantle of the forest vs. the deepmetal mantle, isn't the health -> ac ratio like 20 hp for every ac, which would bump the mantle over the deepmetal piece? also, I'm curious about the mantle clicky, I'm assuming it doesn't stack with other Damage shields, but I am assuming the AC portion does stack with other AC buffs - would the bonus 59 AC outweigh the loss of ~74 damage or whatever from a top tier DS? Specifically in a tanking situation I guess.

I'm no tank, so others should feel free to interject if I'm way off, but HP-to-AC ratios are not nearly as cut and dry as, say, INT-to-Mana ratios. An item with nothing but +10 INT might give 60 mana to a low-level Wizard, which can then be weighed against an item that gives a flat +65 mana; the latter will always win out if mana gain is the only criterion for judgment because everyone would rather have 65 extra mana than 60. (Bear in mind that these figures change for INT values beyond certain levels and caps, which is why I used the example of a low-level Wizard.)

Pure HP vs. pure AC is a more difficult matter to weigh because physical damage mitigation operates on a number of variances. A mob capable of hitting for 100 might, by chance, only land a hit against a Warrior for 30. The next hit might be the full 100 or even lower than the 30. Some damage (like spell damage or devastating blows) will chip away at HP completely ignoring AC, yet mobs that are capable of this kind of damage are also in the minority. With such wild variation, it seems clear that attaching a fixed ratio of HP-to-AC is only useful as a rule of thumb and nowhere near a 100% reliable figure.

I created that thread simply because I was curious as to the absolute highest AC attainable for a twink toon with nothing but buyable gear. I didn't mean to say that an item with, say, 30 AC and no HP is necessarily better than an item with 20 AC and 100 HP.

Regarding buff type conflicts, don't forget about the newish official web-based spell parser! It is especially useful for checking whether or not certain clickies will stack. In case you'd rather just have a quick answer about the Mantle of the Forest effect, here is the list of buffs that will not stack with it:

Code:
Spikecoat

...

Spells that Will Not Stack:
Aegis of Magic
Althuna's Retribution
Ancient: Slumber of the Beast
Arch Shielding
Armor of Protection
Armor of the Faithful
Barbcoat
Bladecoat
Blessed Armor of the Risen
Bramblecoat
Chilling Armor
Defensive Combat Stance
Greater Shielding
Illusionary Chainmail
Illusionary Leather
Illusionary Platemail
Lesser Shielding
Major Shielding
Minor Shielding
Niv`s Harmonic
Relic: High Priest's Bulwark
Shield of the Magi
Shielding
Spikecoat
Spineskin
Thistlecoat
Thorncoat

DS and AC stacks with everything afaik,my 55 Pally always has it up and I nevr saw it
overwritten.
Maybe there are some weird Shm/Enc AC buffs which block it but noone uses them anyway.

the fact that mantle (and upgrades) stack with basically everything, including other DS, is what makes it a pretty valuable item

ah the days of wanting sb plate illusion for the ac.. until needlefist finally drops when you're like tier 9 already
