How do I add to the Wiki?

I created an account and typed in a description of the quest I completed, then discovered I added it in the wrong place (discussion for another quest.) I perused the Editing FAQ but it's still not clear to me how to start a new topic and file it appropriately. Do I have to code in tags to do this, or is there a reasonably freindly UI?

Thanks,

Z.

I've read those 3 messages and they unfortunately are not illuminating at all. I continue to be unable to find any page that allows me to create and file new quests, items, etc. I tried editing the URL as suggested in that thread and that does not work.

I'm not computer illiterate, but geeze, isn't there some sort of UI here that allows one to specify a title and where you want the new thread to go, or do I have to use tags and write raw HTML? If there's not a well documented, easy way to do this the Wiki isn't going to get much added to it.

How so? For example, go to the tailoring page at

http://www.angrygamer.net/sodwiki/index.php?title=Tailoring

Now, if you want to add a new page about, say, Gardening, modify the URL in your browser to be:

http://www.angrygamer.net/sodwiki/index.php?title=Gardening

Press enter, and you should see a page that says:

(There is currently no text in this page)

Now, click the little "edit" tab at the top, and you get a big edit box that allows you to add your new content.

The one gotcha is that for titles with spaces in them, you have to use underlines. Such as

http://www.angrygamer.net/sodwiki/index.php?title=Bracer_of_Absorption

As for adding the content, I find it easiest to browse to an existing page that looks something like what I want to add, click the "edit" tab, and copy-and-paste the formatting text into my new entry.

Ahhh that is an excellent idea ... I'll have to try that with a quest item I have been waiting to add some info on! Thanks Guiardo!

Well I just followed your instructions, typed in a bunch more stuff again, Save'd it, and it has not shown up yet in the area I think I put it in.

That said, asking most people to successfully edit URLS and not screw up the syntax seems a good way to ensure minimal contributions. The URL you gave was fairly simple, but the more complex ones have converted spaces in them, etc.

I've now entered the same data twice, once in the wrong location, and I can't find it in either spot after Save'ing it. I'll give up for now until someone can point to a more sensible way of entering data than hacking URLs, which in this day and age is simply absurd.

Z.

I found my submissions

They all show up under a search for "troll warrior", but I don't find them under the Grobb Quest list which is where I tried to put them.

The wiki doesn't automatically link your new page to other pages; it doesn't know enough about the content to do that. You have to go edit the Grobb Quest page, and add a link to your new page (copy, paste, and edit an existing link).

The one exception to this is the Categories pages, which automatically include all the pages that have been defined to be in that particular category. In your case, you will want to add the tag

[[Category:Quests]]

to the bottom of your page, and it will automatically be added to the Quest category page.

Unfortunately, the zone specific quest pages are not currently set up as categories, although I think it would be really handy if they were. It's just a lot of copying and editing to get it set up, but anyone could do it.

Aha, thanks much! I'll go add that tag.

I also just figured out that one has to edit the page just above yours, to show the page below it. I cut and pasted and modified a link to an existing quest, and it somehow linked it to the the content I'd typed in earlier, probably due to sheer luck in consistency of naming the pages the same as the links.

Sigh. Well this is a lot more primitive than I thought it would be, about one step removed from just coding HTML by hand. But at least I got the one I wanted in. I don't plan on adding any others right now as my faith in the long term utility of this system is pretty low.

Apparently I'm not the only one confused either. I just went through and added [[Category:Quests]] to 4 quests that were similarly hidden because the people who entered them didn't know to add the tags.

On this page ...

http://www.angrygamer.net/sodwiki/index.php?title=Oggok_Quests

... you simply forgot to hit the edit tab and add this:

*[[Iksar/Troll Newbie Armor]] (Warrior)

I inserted the text from your initial (misplaced) post. You need to do this step first when adding a new link to a page that is already in existance. In Guiardo's example post above, the Gardening page was a new page not a new link on a page that already exists (does that make sense?).

Thanks for adding that link. However I figured that part out about the same time you did apparently so we now have two links to my original post and a third which is better titled and more current. But I'm afraid to try to delete anything.

In conclusion on this topic, for me at least, it's accurate to say that adding new entries to the Wiki is somewhat daunting. I can't imagine non technical people doing it without breaking something in the URL field. Given that a Wiki relies on massive community input it seems to me to be counter intuitive for a reasonable knowledge of HTML to be required to add or move or delete entries. But I will continue to add stuff as I can. I added fragments of the several undocumented Grobb quests today.

The Category:Quests mechanism is a relatively new addition to the Wiki. Before that, it was just using the manual zone-specific lists. Whoever set that up didn't go back to all the previously entered quests and add the new tag. I added several myself when I found them missing. Unfortunately that's what happens with no central administration; it doesn't stay very consistent, and it takes effort on everyone's part to make updates when they notice them.

Edit: typos
