I formatted my parents computer yesterday to clean it up and I've reinstalled windows and everything but I can't figure out how to get the connection back working. I'm using a DSL modem which is connected to a wireless router at their computer. My connection on this computer still works fine coming from the wireless connection downstairs.

I've tried everythign I can think of to re-setup a connection on their comp but nothing works. I tried connecting them directly to the dsl modem without going through the router, and then running the modem setup disc and it still wont work. won't allow me to access either the modem or router when i go to browser and go to 192.168.1.1 which is the setup page for them.

does anyone have any suggestions plz?

thanks :/

I've tried going to Create a New Connection and I choose the option to connect to the internet or via broadband or dsl modem, but it never works or the connection made isnt what im looking for. i need to get like, a local area connection made but it wont work

Does the computer respond to the connection in any way? can you ping 192.168.1.1 in a command prompt?

What version of windows is it? pre-XP may give the network card a hard time w/o the drivers.
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Device Manager
See if the proper netcard is listed.

One quick question, first of all: What are the various pieces of hardware you're using?
A) Router (e.g. Linksys WRT54G)
B) Network card
C) Wireless card
D) Modem
E) Anything else you might have thrown into the mix.

First off, disable all antivirus software, spyware prevention crap, P2P protection, etc. that you may have installed, just to rule them out. Also, be sure to disable the Windows firewall. If you really want to you can reenable it later, but get that stuff ruled out as the cause.

See if you can get updated drivers for the NIC. Shouldn't be necessary, but you never know if it might help. Also, if there's any software for the wireless network card, install that. It usually sucks ass (even linksys), but it's worth a shot to get things running. Chances are if it works and the connection is a go, you can disable the software and just use the Windows default.

Does the computer see the wireless network at all?

Can your computer communicate at all with the router? Do your router and the computer have ports so that you can try hard wiring the connection? If so, give that a shot and see if it makes a difference. If there's no immediate change, check for an indicator light for the port to which the computer is connected. Assuming that's on, open a browser window and try connecting to the router's firmware again, with the wired connection.

Oh, and one other question: do you have a physical or MAC address filter enabled on the router? If so, that could prevent the computer from connecting properly. Start > run and type in ipconfig /all then check the MAC or physical address for whichever adapter you're using (wireless or wired) and add it to the permitted connections.

Just a few options, hopefully one of them will help.

Thanks for the suggestions, you guys guessed right that it was the Network card. I had forgotten to reinstall the drivers for it so it wasn't being detected. I put the system CD in, loaded the drivers, and it automatically connected for me. :)

Now I can take a break from that crap (I hate formatting with a passion) and get back to gaming

You should get everything set up once after a reformat, nice and clean, then image it to a DVD so you can just use the backup copy if you ever need to.

Norton ghost is pretty good. Not free, per se, but easy to download.

Just search for cloning software.

Each time I'm going to reformat, I first go and download all of the latest drivers for my hardware (and recent codec packs) and burn it all to a CD. I also make a CD every couple of years with installation programs for all the basic software I use: AIM, irfanview, the media players (winamp, real, wmp, shockwave, yadda yadda), firefox, and so on. Once you reformat, all you have to do is pull the software off a couple of CDs, install it, and proceed to enjoy your smooth, clean, fresh install.

I have to say the best way to do it is to do an image with everything installed and updated it makes it easy to do a reformat every few months
