graphics troubles

I am running Win XP on an AMD motherboard with a 1.1Ghz processor, GeForce 6600 GT card, 1 GB of RAM, DDS i believe. My video card driver is up to date as of only a month or two ago. I am able to log into the server just fine and move around, travel to different zones, etc. My problem is that at times the graphics get really choppy and usually causes extensive lag, and my comp will also inexplicably lock up and have to restart, go through disk check, all that jazz. I am using EQPN, but not sure if it is making any difference. Some days I am able to go a whole evening without running into any problems, but there are also those days where I have to restart and log back in three or four times. I have noticed that I seem to have more trouble around bodies of water and inside tunnels, but this is not always the case. Just the other day my comp locked up as I was running through one of the Badlands zones.

I would appreciate some help on this, as it can get very frustrating sometimes when I repeatedly have to restart my computer, especially if I'm in a spot where I'm likely to die when going LD.

Standardly disable firewalls, anti-viruses, spybot, ad-aware and whatever else you can think of. Some times they work quite stupid and keeps scanning files EQ are using over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

The second thing to check would be hardware temperature.

Well turning off firewall and antivirus didn't seem to help much, still pretty laggy and comp locked up about 3 or 4 times again tonight. Not sure how hot the system is running, by the time I'm able to check, its been restarted and probably has cooled down significantly.

So I have determined that my system is not the sole problem for this; certain zones clearly cause more problems than others. In the past few days I have been in a group in MielB once and Paw another time, both for at least an hour or two. I had no issues while grouping in either of these places, but once I left and started traveling in outdoor zones, the monster raised its ugly head again. It was especially bad in South Badlands, my comp froze up twice just crossing from Paw to NBL. Oddly enough, I was able to go from one side of West Badlands to the other pretty easily.
