Fresh install, choppy gameplay, Win7

Ok so, i've just recently reinstalled SOD/EQ on my comp (Q6600 Quad core processor,
Nvidia 9600GT vid card) now running Windows 7/64.

The game patches and loads up fine, everything seems normal, but the game chops whenever i press a button that opens up a window, such as inventory, or cast spells. It's a split second lag, but just enough to severely hinder play.

I've tried binding core affinity to a single core, doesn't work. I've tried changing screen resolutions, does nothing. I've tried running out of windowed mode and out of EQWindows - doesn't help.

I've played SOD on this same computer last year running WinXP32, and it played fine. So i guess it shouldn't be a hardware issue. Maybe graphics drivers? Or is there something else i can do?

Thanks for any help.

I had some pretty big issues with SOD when I Had all the fancy windows 7 stuff turned on. Bad graphical tearing, awful lag spikes etc. The solution for me was turning them off. You can try turning off aero by setting it to a basic windows 7 setting and see if that helps.

I run Windows XP Professional 32bit with a Q6600 quad core, and nVidia 9800GX2. I have the exact same inventory / bag lag you're talking about. Whenever you open a bag, pick an item up from inventory (or loot something) there's a split second game hiccup. I haven't really experienced the lag with casting spells however.

Long ago I played on an Athlon XP 3500 with a nVidia 6800GT and didn't have this problem (as far as I recall.)

I also experience the nVidia graphics bug where the game textures freak out when the camera paths through objects (like moving through large corpses, getting right next to mobs/players etc). Using the 3dAnalyzer program described in this thread FIXES this graphics issue, but does not resolve the inventory lag. Binding cores, full screen, non windowed mode, all of this has no affect on this inventory lag.

I suspect the problem is caused by newer CPUs, or newer graphics cards -- perhaps a combination of both. We need more input from people who experience this problem, and what their hardware setup is, to find some more commonalities.

Yeah, i forgot to mention that picking up items from the inventory also lags. It's the exact same problem as you're stating. However, like i said, i don't think it's a hardware issue at all. I ran WinXP32 on this identical comp last year and played SOD and never experienced this problem. But if you're having the same issue with WinXP32 then i bet it has to do with graphics drivers.

The screen tearing that you mentioned is another problem that i've learned to deal with and don't care so much about, but thanks for the fix link.

I'll look into playing around with the drivers and/or perhaps even setting up a dual OS boot.

Thanks for the feedback thus far.

Also, i've now installed a second copy of EQ on the comp and am running on another EQ emulator server perfectly, without the inventory/click hickups.

I just briefed over the description of your issue and it reminded me of a problem way back with EQLive and an anti-virus with active file scanning enabled. Are you running an anti-virus suite with active file scanning? Turn it off and make sure you completely disable the scanning and see if that helps. Using AVG as an example, it would cause second-long pauses whenever I did anything like opening a bag or looting an item.

Hey, thanks Antioch. I run AVG, and after changing some settings the game hiccups are completely gone. I had AVG installed on my old setup, but didn't experience this issue, so never thought it would be the culprit. Good catch.

The fix I used, within AVG's settings, select the /sod root directory as an exemption for any scans. Problem solved.

That did indeed fix the issue. Thanks pal =)
