External access to guild/friend info

I'm thinking this suggestion is likely not possible with the current client, but seeing some of the stuff done with fomelo I figured I would ask. Would it be possible to give players access to see who is on in their guild or on their friends list outside of the game, say on the fomelo page? Personally I think it would be a solid addition that would be both useful and just kinda cool. Could it be done?

Please elaborate on what the point would be on knowing if someone is in game or not, from a web utility.

I'll be honest, there are many reasons not to put it in, and as far as I can see, none in support of it, other than being "kinda cool".

As linked by Iae, a web utility for guild management is under creation, however it doesn't sound like that's what you're looking for.

I can see it being useful. I suggested something like this a while back. Basically like a box on the fomelo page that would just list whether or not a person is online. It's not information that would not be readily accessible in game (i.e. I can log in and /who for the same information), but that are certainly situations where it would be helpful. For instance, I could be at work without SoD access and check to see if a friend was online playing, or I just be off line waiting for a raid leader or someone who I'm buying something from to get on and check on that without being in game.

Ikaa I can't think of any reasons not to have it in aside the effort that comes with upgrading the code, could you elaborate?

Low priority
Return on investment
Usefulness (besides being "kinda cool")

Just to list 3. I see where you are coming from, but if you are at work without access to sod, sure you can check and see if a friend is online, and if they are you can say "Hey, soandso is online" and if they aren't, you can say "Oh, soandso isn't online". You wont be able to log in and do anything about it, since as stated, you don't have access to log in. If you are trying to buy something, or waiting on a raid, you'll have to log in anyways to either join or make your purchase.. so again.. I just don't see where this is useful, which makes it a really low priority, since it offers no functionality besides "Hey neat".

I'm not in a position to say no, im simply offering my personal viewpoints on it. Really if it's something that would truly benefit the community, it has to do something more than be "kinda cool".

Well I don't see how it would be any less "useful" than Fomelo in the first place, which is pretty much just cool factor. The ability to see who was on in your guild without being on would be useful for a number of situations and would add a decent deal of convenience. I'm not saying it would have to be anything high priority. Like I said, Fomelo as a whole doesn't seem to be anything more that "kinda cool."

I glanced at the guild management post which seems like a nice implementation. Doesn't sound like what I'm after really, but I didn't read through much of the thread.

It was discussed under fomelo thread here, and I hope it never happens.

Ok, but he wasn't really asking what I was asking. I would like to be able to see who is currently online in your guild, in short. Why would you hope that never happens?

I know what you're referring to, the "Game" had an app that you could log on outside of the server (EQIM) and be able to chat with your friends, see who was online, etc...

I used all of about 10 times. And yes, I still have an active Live account. *shrug* IRC works just fine, and you can have your friends log in there, create your own channel, whatever. With the current client (since EQIM connected to channel servers, not world servers) , pretty sure that won't work.

Before the name change, online and irc were connected and you could join irc channels in game

Ahhh, okay, I was still on Live then... but this you had a seperate interface (even made it compatible with Trillian for a while) that you could see your friends, who was in channels, etc... not a serverwide thing.

It started in 2002(3?) went away in 2006? or something when they did some overhauling of stuff. I could sit at my desk & chat with folks who were in game, and it would appear in their chat box like a tell or chat channel tell.

Was cool, kinda. But over all, just another "thing" that got dropped. And I rarely used. *shrug*
