Disappointed

Okay, I'm done with this issue. I had tried to get a discussion going with the devs and other players about the knight weapon change, in the hopes of all parties involved gaining a better understanding of the situation. The players were not given any warning of this massive shift in itemization, and the devs refused to justify their reasons for doing it. In a few days/weeks this patch will likely be reverted or toned way back; my intention in trying to discuss things with the devs and other players was to lessen the time it will take for people to understand the mistakes made in this nerf.

When a dev creates a thread in Chillville explicitly stating that players should QQ there, rather than encouraging people to actually have a meaningful debate and constructive interaction, something is seriously wrong. When the majority of the thread evolves into a number of players posting suggestions and feedback, with two devs posting responses, numbers, etc to try and help us understand this change, an admin closes the thread. Allielyn, using the ~5 shit posts in a 4+ page thread to justify that action is laughable. Claiming that the thread was a flamewar, and that you were hoping for communication between devs and players that wasn't happening, is just flat-out wrong. Read the thread again. Every post, not just the handful of trolls. Observe the interaction that was going on between the players and the two devs who were posting. Granted, some of the players were being negative or angry in their posts. Springing this change on the playerbase in the manner you guys did will cause that; you can't blame people for being upset over this change, and acting as such.

Re-creating the thread, again with a similar OP (and actually adding that people who do anything other than QQ will be "tarred and feathered") is 100% contradictory to your statements in the final post of the first thread, Allielyn. Seriously, to an outsider looking in, it would look like you're 2 people posting on 1 account, neither of whom are actually reading the threads you are supposedly disappointed in.

You then give the S+R thread I created your blessing, while stating that yourself or the devs will not be contributing any hard numbers or formulas to back up your decisions. I can't really see how this makes any sense. You are the people who have the ability to run tests with every variable 100% controlled, not the players. I can understand that not every minor tweak in the game needs to be completely explained and supported with math by the staff. This drastic itemization rebalance does though, especially with the complete lack of an explanation or warning. Yet even with that policy, players were starting to post their own parses within minutes of the S+R thread being created. You then lock the thread (and delete a dev's chillville-quality reply to Stope.) Rather than completely disallowing any discussion to continue amongst any of the players and the staff, why don't you simply delete the post(s) made by players that so offend you, or issue them a warning?

All that being said, this thread will also likely be deleted/trash canned if the actions of the past 24 hours are continued. Fine. I hope you at least read this and try to empathize a bit from the player's perspective before you kill this thread though.

TL;DR- This whole change was handled in pretty much the worst way possible, and you guys received QQ/flames/troll responses from players as a direct result. Rather than doing anything to help the situation, you systematically did everything possible to make it worse. I honestly expected much better from the staff based on your track record and the great things you all have done for this server in the past.

I'm not sure if we're talking about the same post but nothing was disallowed; someone posted something patronizing and that was the point where I expected a new thread to be started. I'm surprised no one did, really.

I don't have it in me to created a new thread every time an existing one is locked because of a single patronizing post. Maybe someone else does, or maybe the methods of encouraging meaningful discussion should be re-evaluated.

Regardless, I completely understand you responding to the onslaught of hatred in the manner you did and I wish that it had been avoided. Everyone posting on these boards is still a human being that has devoted significant amounts of their time to this game (supposedly for the purpose of having fun) and expecting people to maintain their enjoyment/motivation/etc while being ganged up on by numerous other players acting like 4 year olds is unrealistic. I do think there are better ways to prevent this from happening though, which would result in a better experience for everyone.

You realize this could be directly applied to staff members and the bullshit they have to wade through right?

That is precisely who I *was* applying it to, yes.

They might have less bullshit to wade through if they didn't respond to players trying to be constructive and as non-offensive as possible with stuff like Zaela's and Allielyn's most recent responses in this thread.

Hey man, I tried to create a discussion about how far they should go with discussing changes with the playerbase, and when that is or isn't appropriate, and it got trashcanned before I could even read a response. Had to go read it in the can to see if there was something offensive or such that warranted the trashing.. but hell if I know.

I'm afraid your arguments are similarly falling on deaf ears my friend. Just take comfort in the fact that while they generally lack in people skills, they do have a pretty decent game with a lot of custom content that's worth playing.

This might be constructive if there were anything left to be said about the matter. The lesson is learned; no changes will be made to knights. Case closed. Move along.

Remove knights from the game please

I don't fit your view of a cuddly warm make-you-feel-good staffer. I can't say I'm sorry. Perhaps we as staffers do need to be more transparent - about the fact that any transparency we DO give you guys is a privilege, and not a right.

I think Dinadass has made a really good general point though.

Serious discussion is impeded because a number of posters quite often don't read the posts properly and/or respond in a sarcastic/snide/dismissive manner and/or troll and/or change the topic.

On several occasions I have attempted to make serious points only to have them derided by some in a really condescending way.

There really is a need for serious discussion, perhaps in the same way that loose platinum is an area for general dicking around we could have an area where flaming and trolling are absolutely forbidden and people are expected to leave theor emotions behind before posting.

Finally, I would like to express my thanks for all the Devs for the work they do, SoD is an amazing game and generates huge emotions ranging form total joy to total despair. It's easy to see why people lose their tempers or react too quickly when they read something they don't like. This applies to players and Devs alike, we do need to remember that this is only a game.

There are forums for actual discussion. Pretty much anywhere outside Chillville in fact.

When a dev creates a thread in Chillville explicitly stating that players should QQ there

Not really talking about the specific change.

But I will say that when staff created a thread for QQ, I did figure that this was a place I could QQ without anyone getting their feelings hurt. It sounds now like staff was offended. I know that if the staff wanted a more serious discussion from me, then a thread in a different area that did not say it was for QQ would have brought a very different reaction from me.

Some of the staff reaction sounds like "Fine, we won't ever try to help Knights again!!!" I hope I am misreading that. I think just about everyone appreciates the staff (there are always a few assholes). But it was a shock to see melee dps reduced by over 50%. I suggest that a little forewarning would really help players and reduce some of the drama. You gotta admit that was a pretty huge change with no apparent upside to the classes primary role.

I am sad that it seems the staff took this episode personal. I know that was not my intent.

I always see a lot of elitism in these forums. Seems like the player base is a second class citizen. But hey, i just play here and keep my mouth such. Well sorta.

I think it sounds like it a lot more than it is. Staff says things like they don't owe the players anything and so forth. But it is pretty evident that they do care. A lot. Don't let their tough veneer fool you.

disappointed in knights

this wont be a popular reply.. but meh..

How many knights grabbed a two hander and spent the day trying out the changes to develope some real feedback?

How many knights were considered DPS before the change? yer fooling yerself.

DPS wasn't taken away, it was changed to another weapon type, completely obtainable.

How many knights think they held aggro because of their DPS? *shrug* I never did. I relied on hits.. not damage. Still will.

Fair? Fair for the balance of the game would be to keep the changes, MINUS the compensation..
Seriously.

Drastic change? How slowly should they change it to wind up at the same point? Which btw, is a fair amount.

Everyone seems to agree in the change but not the size of it.. I'm a knight, and i'll admit i think the knights are way overblessed in some areas..

How many knights complained simply because they didnt HAVE a 2 hander because they never had one.. why did they never have one? Because the 1handers were so powerful it was stupid to consider getting a 2hander.. My 1hand hammer did 2hand dmg, with the benefit of a shield.. oh yeah, thats fair to warriors who suck it up and tank like a man.

How many knights considered giving the devs time to view the results, and compensate us in the 2hander area?

I'll tell ya why I think all the fuss commenced. Folks said " my favorite weapon that cost me nothing but a roll of the dice, isn't as good anymore!! I don't want to have to pay another roll of the dice for a new one! I don't want change to the least looked at classes in SoD!!"

I can only hope that we will be as we were to begin with.. and not flat out nerfed with no compensation.

I did spend the day trying the change, with a 2hander (which wasn't very good btw) and got by just fine in group/duo/and solo. Aggro?? Hit the attack key and taunt, and maybe use some of the mana that you've never had to use before because its wasted on classes that haven't even had to use much of it til now.

Interferes with Pallys heals?? If you're having to heal, you need a new cleric/druid/shaman. If you're soloing/duoing .. why did you make a tank for in the first place then?

I'm done..but I hope knights are not finished over this.

How many knights ...?

I think you are assuming a few things. You also seem to have a misunderstanding of some game mechanics. Not a big deal, but I would encourage you to be cautious before condemning large numbers of people.
