Defense while casting

I heard there was a change made recently in which a player loses all riposte, parry, dodge, etc. abilities while casting a spell. Can this be confirmed?

I've heard no mention of it. It'd be a crazy move though because it'd cripple paladins and sk's.

And to a lesser extent, Rangers.

Removing non-Dodge defense skills while casting was finalized at one point, but I haven't heard mention of it ever going in and Wiz may simply have changed his mind.

Isn't that why we have channeling - to prevent interruptions while being beat down?

I can understand having dodge to an extent - but parry or riposte? - don't see the need when there is suppose to be a skill (channeling) for this purpose that all casters and hybrids receive.

I believe channeling is only for casting and moving. Basically if you have no channeling skill and move at all while casting, you get interupted, whereas a high channeling skill you might be able to move a couple steps while casting a spell.

If this change is in, it's also pretty bad for int casters since they're only defense skill is dodge, and they sure aren't going to be standing there taking hits without casting. Ex. Casting rooting/concussion/FD/Mez while being beat on from agro/adds/etc. This would make dodge a practically useless skill.

Is this change actually in?

Channeling would keep you from being interrupted while being hit, Riposte/dodge/parry would keep you from taking a beating every time you tried to cast a spell.

I would imagine Paladin's and SK's would suffer from this since they tank and cast. If casting would take away like 3-4 dodge skills then I would think it would make Palladin's and SK's not be able to cast as much while tanking since they would take such a beating.

And without casting PAL/SK isn't going to be able to hold aggro worth beans. So you'd have a tank who can either keep aggro and get the crap beat out of them or have a tank that can take a beating, but can't hold aggro. :-/ Doesn't sound good to me.

I sure hope this isn't considered a "good" idea. Me no likey...

and you know what?? THAT'S OUR MYSTERY SQUARE!!!!!! (get excited) YOU could win a trip to...... florida.. yah.. we're poor now.

I was just over at Wiz' house, this is confirmed. He didn't tell me why, just said that he hates Aratar. I agreed. :)

All monks should die a horrible painful death. And be forced to wear pink t-shirts. Ah...it appears my plan has been set in motion...

This post combined with your avatar of you in a tight pink shirt disturbs me.

distrubing avatar

Melwin, your avatar disturbs me. You looking around like that, combined with your limitless expanse of your knowledge, I wonder: what does he see? What does he think?

I didn't do it! You can't prove anything!

edit: fixed a silly spelling error

Parry + Riposte are lost while casting. This was done to balance out the fact that a hybrid with a shield can out-mitigate a warrior, instead of just nerfing shields.

Dodge, shield block are retained while casting.

Also, this has been in for some two months, so no sudden cries of I will never be able to tank again!!, please.
