Decidion

Dalayan Beginner
What is up with people today. Is it OK to discuss promoting the use of drugs in guild chat? Why? What about it's effect on younger players? I want to play with my sons, but there is no place for them to listen to this crap.

What about Religion? Guns? Sex? Politics? are those ok too? You know damn well people cannot have civilized discussions about this kind of stuff in a chat room, so why even allow it?

A bunch of folks just left the beginners guild today (including me) because they dont want to listen to this. It defeats the whole purpose of having this guild in the first place.

Sheesh....

I have not been in dalayas beginners for a really long time but these subjects used to get axed by gm's whenever they did occur. Maybe a gm was not on and your just taking it too seriously

A GM was on....forget which one, but they answered a question in guild chat about someones name.

How serious or not do you need to be about someone extolling the virtues of using Marijuana, Cocaine and LSD?

In my time in <DB> I know I saw a lot of stuff I don't particularly agree with... that said, you're probably not going to find a kid friendly or even PG / PG-13 anything in this game. Guilds are not and don't have to be clean. Public lines don't have to be clean. Groups are usually pickups with people you don't know who may choose to use language you don't agree with... most every pickup group I've ever been in has at some point had someone mention sexuality or drug use... It's not a great part of the game imho but depending upon your sensitivity to it, you will probably see what you consider too much of it everywhere.

That said, there are nice people here, and usually I just try to ignore the talk I don't appreciate... but know that my kids would never be playing this game (unless they both (kids and game) survive til the kids are much older).

Alternatively, you could have put whoever was saying things you found offensive on ignore or you could have simply turned off guild chat for awhile. Leaving the guild because of it was pretty foolish imo if you are new to SoD. One can learn a whole lot about the game in Dalayas Beginners but yes...of course you will have to filter out some garbage in the process.

Yeah, most of the stuff we can just ignore, but today it was going on and on...people just spamming constantly back and forth.

I'm surprised they don't limit this kind of discussion. Or why cant people just take it to tells?

I understand that private, other than Dalaya's Beginner's chat is open to whatever the guild decides, but with DB, everyone is forced into the guild to begin with whether they like it or not. You could almost construe the game admins as being supportive of the chat topics.

Yeah you can leave the guild right away (well once you figure out how to), but again, that defeats the whole purpose of the Beginner's guild.

I didn't even know this was possible...

I think there is a toggle for it in the options..same for auction/ooc/whatever. Even if there isnt, you can always divert it into another window and minimize it. Oddly enough...Dalayas Beginners would have been a good place to ask :)

That said, 'damage' done, with you not being in DB anymore, feel free to PM me here or send tells to Calaran in game if you see me on (usually CST evening times) and I'll be glad to answer anything I'm able.

Thanks Calaran...I appreciate it. I wish there were a lot more players like you (and Syalara) on the shard.

TBH, I think many people here wish there were less like me ;) You'll find a LOT of friendly and helpful people around really... in fact one of the people I can think of that has one of the worst jerk/whatever reputations on the game is probably one of the most helpful people in the game if you just don't take stuff he says too seriously and don't mind helping him enjoy the game too.

Anyway, offer stands, and welcome to SoD.

<Dalaya's Beginners> guild chat is considered a public chat channel.

A lot of GM characters (my GM character included) are in <Dalaya's Beginners>.

GMs handling petitions tend to do quite a bit of zoning and may miss things, but we do try to "discourage" particularly unsavory topics such that illicit drug abuse in public channels.

/ooc has recently been out of control IMO and I can only imagine that DB was too. The naughty word filter helps a lot and a lot of time I just turn off the global channels. I use ALT+O and click the Filters tab and uncheck those channels. All I am really saying is that I sympathize with the OP and do consider the inane and offensive language in the global channels to be the worst aspect of the server. And hell, I am in the army and am used to some pretty spicy language, so it isn't even that.

But whatever the GM's think is acceptable has to be the standard. I am just glad I have the option to turn it off.

Yeah I'm somewhat used to it, hard to offend, etc... but it's certainly my least favorite part of the server. Obviously it hasn't gotten rid of me, but I sympathize as well.

It is impossible to police every public chat channel 100% of the time, nor does anyone want to do it. Use ignore, use filters, use screenshots and petition, or leave the guild, as you did. This is a terrible whiny thread which could have been resolved quietly. Sorry your delicate sensibilities were offended, but perhaps you shouldn't do quests either, since there is both harsh language and adult themes in some of them.

Keep in mind however, this isn't exactly a game made for children (as with all online games), so you have no cause defending the unspoken "younger players". If you want your sons to play, that's your decision, and its up to you to filter what they see if something offends you. Unless things get out of hand (as they quickly tend to with politics or religion) some topics you might find offenseive are allowed or overlooked to a degree, until they cross a line, which seems to be set at a threshhold higher than you are comfortable with.
