Customizing EQ

I was just curious, I'm not a tech guru or anything, but I'm familiar with games like NWN that have built-in game editors and such, but I was wondering how a game like EQ get customized? Is there some sort of editor that is used to create a world like EQ (or wow, or any other game w/o a built-in editor). Just wondering how it all works.

If you're interested in making custom EQ stuff, would really require your own server or access to ones DB and such. Best real source is www.eqemulator.org and roam through forums.
