Crashing

One other question - do you crash immediately? Or do you sit zoning for X number of seconds before getting dumped? If so, what (roughly) is X?

When I crash while zoning it either takes a minute or two to get bumped to server select or the window freezes indefinitely. I usually Alt-F4 upon zoning though because its faster to load a new window.

Invariably the crashes occur AFTER reaching the animated screen where it tells me where I am etcetera. When I click the enter world button the next screen appears and then it freezes.

When I zone the screen freezes to zone and stays frozen; very occasionally I get booted to log in screen but usually I just end up with a dead window.

May be worse if zoning 2 toons but not evidently so.

I've been sick and not on, but this is EXACTLY what happens to me when I play on my Lenovo T61. It doesn't happen on my Dell Inspiron e1505, but I have since re-formated the Lenovo and not installed EQ yet.

Does it take 2 restarts of an EQ instance, after a crash, before you can log back in?

There is absolutely no pattern; occasionally I need 2 or 3 starts to get on but other times it's just once.

When I zone to OG from Athica via Underhill I can sometimes get both toons there without a crash but usually will crash once or twice.

As I typed this I tried to zone from Remnants to Athica and the screen froze but then I was booted to log in screen so as I said no pattern whatsoever.

I'm not sure if my problem is related, but here it goes. I've been playing from China for about 8 months and not had any major issues. In about the last week or so, I constantly have problems trying to log in and when I do get in, I have lag spiking up to 80% at times. I enter my account info and password and usually get to the server population screen before it then sends me back to the enter your account info/password screen. It happens over and over telling me to to try re-running the patch etc... Some days I try for hours constantly with no luck getting on. If I do manage to connect, it runs with a constant lag. If I try to zone or end up zoning, it's pretty much a crash where I have to try to login again which sometimes takes 30 mins or I give up after a few hours of trying.

I heard other people who are overseas recently having connection issues too. I don't notice it with anything else I run or do, just with SOD. Any advice on things to try please post away. I enjoy playing this game and it's very frustrating when I have a good chunk of time I can put in, but I'm unable to log in. Thanks in advance!

I have a similar issue here in the North America. Happens much more on my HP Pavilion p7-1446s with windows 8 than my Samsung QX410-S02US with Windows 7(main upgrade on Samsung was SSD). The issue I have is the game freezing on zone. can re-login immediately. On re-login I am in the zone I was going to and if I was underwater most of my oxygen is depleted which is annoying since you can die and it wouldn't be your fault.

e/ removed as this seemed to work for a couple weeks and now i am back to where i was. could simply be a weird coincidence.

if task manager is open i can tell when i am going to crash. 0%/not responding seems to be happening 100% of the time.

Are there any new thoughts on the crashing problems? My wife and I are still having issues across our 3 different computers. I have not found anything in common for when we successfully zone or end up crashing. I have begun to just open and watch my task manager when zoning, if the eqgame.exe CPU percent goes and stays at 0%, I just Alt-F4 and restart the patcher... Its like its waiting for the information to come back from the server. Even when I am 2 boxing on the same computer, one toon will zone and the second one will crash..

i have tried to resource monitor the game via memory, network, cpu to no luck, but i will continue doing so. i have some better performance monitoring software here at work that i will try.

this is a confusing issue considering the following observations:

* the server moved when i was gone, but logically if the issue was server related and not client related, more people would likely be having issues.
* i am using the same client...in fact...the same exact set of files and everything in both locations i play. across the board everyone is using a client slightly older than titanium. why are they not having issues?
* my isp at both locations is the same...tracert obviously ends at the sod server location, and both of them begin at comcast in beaverton, oregon and make the same hops along the way.
* my machine at home used to run sod just fine. it was built for sod and is used for nothing else because it would be terrible for anything else.
* the issue doesn't happen everytime. sometimes you can go an entire day without a crash, other days you will crash almost every time you zone.
* server population makes no difference. i've had bad morning with 40 people online and good nights with 190 people on.
* i have opened up every port on my router in testing, makes no difference.
* i have tried using eqw with eqplaynice, normal client with eqplaynice, eqw without eqplaynice, and normal client without eqplaynice. it makes no difference.

i would love to try wineq but it was made after this version of everquest and as such the client is not supported.

Been awhile since I've used my Systems Analyst kung-fu..

In addition to most of what you have tried I;
*turned models on and off
*turned cashing on and off, thinking maybe client was getting confused on where it was loading files from...

We can log onto SoD fine and even get to our character select screen without issues. but entering world, or zoning is a problem. I wish we would have a night of no crashes. We just accept that we are going to have to restart the client over and over each time we zone, or try entering world. Once we are in the zone and fighting, we have no problems whatsoever, its just getting all of our toons traveling through multiple zones to fight or quest..

I'm also using the same files copied and pasted across an XP, Vista and Win8 laptop. Maybe thats the issue, something is corrupted in my files. These files were working 6 or 8 months ago, I'm not positive how long ago. But I believe people said they were still having crashing problems after a fresh install too..

I noticed the other day that most often in cities I will crash, but when I got away from them out where I was the only toon in the zone I had a higher success rate, but hard to test when I really cannot tell how many people if any were in the zone when I do crash..

I have not tried a fresh install of the EQ files, I'd just have to look up the expansions, since I have the original expansion disks, not the combined edition and would try to install in order. Need to check too if I need update from Sony servers or just install the base files and then update from SoD..

yep. in game is fine, loading world/zoning is the only issue.

i have tried two re-installs myself. the first time uninstalling everquest titanium had left over some p1999 files that i thought may be problematic. so after the uninstall i went and deleted every possible trace of everquest i could find.

then i installed i again, and the same problem occurred.

i then took my exact sod directory from work and copied it over to home and the issue still occurs.

i hadn't tried clearing cache, but it seems to not help so i won't mess around too much.

about to head home now and i will try some more thorough resource monitoring.

If you're using the same Comcast outfit in Beaverton I was using and are on wireless net with their modem I had to. Call and have them come out and adjust the signal strength because I kept crashing. Worth a shot?

We are still crashing at least 3 out of 4 times zoning or loading from character select... A couple days ago on one of my 2 boxes I zoned like 4 times in a row without crashing.. but the other game instance would still crash on every zone.. was beyond weird since I was running the two guys through the same zones..

yea I love it when I've got about an hour to play and I spent 50 minutes just trying to get in game and to my destination.

hopefully this gets resolved sometime... and hopefully it isn't affecting a large portion of the population.

for the record, I'm also playing from China. I started noticing this issue around the beginning of May, although it may have started earlier than that (others are saying March, I think?). I'll be back in the US in about a month, so I'm not expecting to deal with it after that.

ok so the problem has been resolved...at least in my situation.

after checking the debug.txt it seemed the eqgfx dll was not loading whenever the zone/login would fail. i would simply time out.

->

i did a bunch of stuff that i am not going to list here because it simply doesn't matter. what finally ended up working was NOT using the default ui i had. something is wrong with it.

i always was stumped that back when i played over a year ago, i never had crashes with the same set of files. back then, i used soesd2 ui and not the default.

being able to zone without crashing again is great, even if i don't like the soesd2ui anymore. i will definitely have to look out for something better for me.
