Crash after server select

Hrmm, maybe a GM can take a look at logs and see whats happening when you get to server select screen, and why it's dying.
I'll think aobut it some more. By the way, norton firewall continues to fk things up even when it's disabled. Dunno if you are running that, though.
 
Hmm. Can someone who is getting this issue talk to me in IRC? I want to try a few things.
 
I would wiz, but for some reason I can't connect to the SOD IRC server. Anyways, I have been having more luck connecting as of late. Still some problems, but most of the time I am able to get on. Anyways if I can find a way to get on IRC than I will try to get a hold of you wiz.

"Eqgame.exe has caused an error in <Unknown>" this is the "crashing" message that appears about 25% through as everquest starts loading the game (and the music starts playing); just after I choose the SOD server and click "Play".

I got a message that pretty much said that. I am returning to WR/SOD after many monthes so I have just formatted and reinstalled Windows ME (old comp). EQ and SOD patcher is the second piece of software i've installed on this OS, so its still, somewhat virgin. i'm not sure what could be wrong. I've read most the posts so i'll just be patient and wait. I hope the problem fixing goes well GL!

Hey all,

I'be been dealing with this problem for two days now. What seemed to solve it for me was, upon getting to the server select screen, go ahead and hit "PLAY" then ctrl+alt+r to get your mouse free and click on the SoD patcher icon, and start running another window, as if you were going to 2 box. That seemes to bring me through consistantly. Hope that helps!

Well I had success connecting for a few days, but I guess it was just a stroke of good luck. I can consistently connect during the day, but at night time I can't connect again. I have a feeling that when more people are accessing the internet at my residence, the slower my connection gets. As a result of this it seems that my connection is either refused by the server or just can't find it. Either way, it looks like alot of people are having this problem. Just wondering if there is a fix on the way or any suggestions at all. By the way I tried what Jaedi41 suggest but no luck. Anyways thanks in advance, I hope this problem will hopefully get looked at. Thanks.

Bump. Been having this problem for a couple weeks now. I will post my dbg.txt info when I get home from work. My symptoms are pretty much the same thing people have been posting here. It is happening on two computers. One is brand new. I can connect during non peak hours, but around 8-11pm CST, I either get the 1017 error when I press play or enter on the server select screen, or it just hangs up at the Title screen after picking my char and pressing enter world and I have to ctrl+alt+delt out. I have tried the winsock fix someone suggested earlier in this topic. I have all of the ports forwarded that Wany posted sometime around May. More info when I get home later....

Edit: Well, nevermind. Everything seems to be working fine now.
 
Yo zalkkortiz, i'm using a DW7000 modem and having the exact same problem. However, I've gotten to where I'm getting the same error message that was originally what this topic was about, that damn 5e error.

I'm running on a wireless network (Dlink router, firewall is OFF) and I also have a LAN built in card. I read on the fourms from EQ that sometimes it will send info through the LAN card rather than the Wireless. So what you can do is try turning off that LAN card. I uninstalled it through my Hardware Manager, however that was just temporary since Windows will try to reinstall it on your next boot up, so just disabling it SHOULD work.

I also had a Dial up connection which I removed too since I dont connect that way anyways anymore.

So what I'm running now is just seeing the Internet Connection Sharing thinger and my Wireless network adapter in my Network Devices\Adapters.

That for whatever reason cleared up that error you were getting and now I got the 5e error.

I've unfortuantly havn't figured out a solution for that error, i'm still trying....I'll get back to this board when I figure it out.

EDIT Pt1: I am again getting the original error, so maybe I just cleared up a bit of something but not enough to TOTALLY fix that problem. Again, working right now on that UDP packet error thing, will be connecting to IRC shortly to talk with anyone there.

EDIT Pt2: Also, if you havn't already, you can try bridging your LAN and Wireless network cards together, this seems to work to keep internet connectivity and routes all computers attached to your LAN card (assuming you set it up this way) to use your computer to access your wireless card to access the internet. You can of course do this vice versa i'm sure but I didn't mess around with that to try.
 
UDP Echos...

I sent a copy of that dbg.txt file to a friend of mine and he was reminded of something with UDP (the same protocol that EQ uses) has a problem where it sends or receives some packets out of order....so when we get that Unexpected message 5e, it could be a UDP packet outta place and it messes up the order of things. I'm awaiting his DVD with all the files on it tomorrow, since he can connect with his files and I cant.

I'll post more when I get some more info.
 
Worked for a few days, but last night and today it's not connecting again. Still getting the 1017 error when pressing play from the server select screen. Here is my dbg file from today only. It might be some of the same info a few times, because I tried to log in three or four times. I also repatched everything, but that didn't help. If Wiz is still looking for someone to talk to in IRC about trying some new things, I'm up for being the guinea pig.

I worked with Wiz on this today. The problem you are having is that the server isn't authorizing you. Sometimes we got past that error, sometimes we didn't, the REAL error is this Unexpected Message 5e error. The not being authorized is just a "ghost" of that error.

Wiz ran outta ideas on what is causing it, but have you logged in before? And what type of internet are you using? Speed? Ping time to www.shardsofdalaya.com? And when you get that dbg.txt file, does it usually boot you back to the SOE screen?

I'm trying to figure out if there is something relating this error between the people who have it. I am using Satelite Internet, connecting about 256kbps with a ping time of 800-1000.

Hes saying that there is nothing really consistant with this error, and something about how when you go to click server select, it starts loading you in and choosing your first character or no character and starts to load that but crashes.

Was talking on IRC about how a higher ping time can sometimes cause a DC, if you would remember on live you could go a long time without any data going though and the server will reconnect you and you can keep on going without being LD, but on SoD if you fall even just a little behind you get DC'd.

I'm just trying to put together a picture of what people are running, speeds, connection method to the internet, ect. The more info we get the sooner we can get an answer.

EDIT: Also, we only need like the last few lines of your dbg.txt file, usually around where it says ERROR or something, or just the last 5-10 lines of your dbg.txt file BEFORE (say like it boots you back to the SOE screen) it starts up eqmain.dll again.

I am on a wireless cable connection at 54 mbps. I can double that if I plug directly into the modem, but it's in the back of the house, and I'm on a laptop and usually all over the place, so that wouldn't really work for me. Don't know if a tracerout will help you out any, but I will post one at the end just in case. I have been playing on SoD since around May of this year, and I have never had this problem until around the beginning of this month or so. I have constantly been on this same wireless connection, and the only change I have made to the computer is installing WoW. I did try taking it off and connecting, but that was not causing any issues. There seems to be no consistency as to which screen I will be booted back to. Sometimes it's the company screen, and sometimes it's the server select screen. Seems to be about a 50:50 chance either way. I have ports 5997,9000,7770-7794,7950-8091 forwarded for SoD. While in game, I get these strange latency spikes from around 150 or 200 up to like 3k or so, but they only last a second or two, and I've had that going on ever since I started watching my latency bar. It doesn't affect my gameplay at all, and I wouldn't even know it was going on at all if it weren't for the latency bar. Here is my tracerout:

I am able to log on sometimes, but usually the game freezes and I have to ctrl+alt+delt out after a while when I zone somewhere. Don't know if the two problems are related, but I never had this problem before the connection problem came along, so I'm guessing they are. Thanks to everyone who is working on this. Yup, Jinx is another victim of this strange ghost.

Jinx, what does it say when you do a ping on the www.shardsofdalaya.com server? Go to your start menu, run, cmd, ping www.shardsofdalaya.com. I'm trying to figure out if its a lag issue that is possible causing it. I was talking with someone on IRC (sorry i forget your name, i'm horrid with names)

Also, what kind of internet do you use, the connection speed too. Well if you know the connection speed on your DSL (if you have that)

Some people can get by the error...others like me it wont no matter how many times I try to log in. So i'm just trying to put together a profile of similaritys.

Also, is this a fresh download patch of EQ, did you install of the disks and patch or just used the patcher?

I see where jinx is getting the 5e error. I just went through my log I posted a few posts above his, and saw nothing about 5e. Does that mean I am having a different problem than you guys? Also, I just tried to ping the server again, and got no response. It might be because I am at work right now, or because the server is still down (I think), or something else entirely. Do you need me to repost my dbg file and cut out some of the unneeded crap? I know I put a lot in there. This computer is running on a fresh installation from the cds.
