Character Retirement

I had, back when Athica was just getting started, heard talk about the possability of having a character off your account 'retire' and continue on as an NPC as an instructor/merchant/whatever. Anyone know if this ever happened or if the discussion was more along the lines of 'it would be neat if...'?
 
It's something I always personally wanted to implement, but I've never found a feasible way to actually do it that wouldn't result in it being virtually meaningless.
 
I think it would be fun if various random player names were worked into the NPC scripts or some such.
