Character names.

So like.. There are people who make a new character and never play it, just because they want to save that name incase they ever want to make a new char and use it. I am just wondering if there is a way to check if a account is active or not, because there is one name I would really like to have, but it has been a lvl 1 with no equipment and was probably that way for years.

Anything I can do about this, or am I screwed?
 
What name could possibly be in such huge demand that it doesnt violate the rules in some form? The way I see the name setup atm is that you pretty much have to have a made up name, unless of course you want to use a real, "ordinary" name such as Richard.
 
soo uhhh, do the admins have anything they would like to say about this? Maybe something like if a character is below lvl 20 and has little to no equipment on and has not been logged in for 60 or 90 days, some one can request that that character be deleted so they can have the name?

I guess I'm a noob too .. well yeah I definately am :p But I have tried to read as much as the wiki and forums as I could and also wasn't aware of the above mentioned ability. How can you see the level and equipment of a character not online?
 
I have 3 toons naked and level 1 that I use for tradeskill supply whoring and would not be pleased if some dude just wanted thier names and POOF'd em away.

I am not saying this is the issue you ran into but its another way to look at it.

Also, I would assume the burden this would place on admins would be fairly high. Every dude whose name was rejected would likely petition for a duplicate name removal or some such.

But anyway, good luck in getting your name.
 
Well, I recall Live running purges every once in a while of level 1 characters that haven't been played in the last X months. That might be a solution relatively easy to implement to people "camping" names without actually using the characters.

Though I'm wondering just how much of a problem it is given the (relatively) low population of SoD...

I'm not an admin, but there's no way that's gonna happen. Just pick a different name.

If its a true tradeskill whore then past 30 in any tradeskill you will gain xp and am sure befor you reach 130 in any tradeskill you will be past level 2

I think the key here is holding items for the trade-skill character, not being the trade-skill character.
 
aww gotcha, but even still if sod did plan to do a cleanup am sure thay would give ya notice and you could log on that toon and kill a gaint rat and become level 2 so your toon wouldnt be deleted.
 
I personally have a few level 1 twinks that I haven't gotten around to playing yet, so randomly purging the system so you can have a name and delete everyones level 1 mules is craziness. Just a thought, why don't you /ooc in the game and try to find the person who owns the character? If it was me, I'd gladly move my stuff over to a different character and delete that one so you could have the name, or at least propose to a GM to get the named change to accomodate you... unless it was some awesome name that you couldnt get, i.e. I had a char named Zergling for a while... with obvious intentions of joining Venerate! - though he has long since passed.
 
Lol I wasnt saying purge every lvl 1 character, but maybe if like the character is below lvl 5, and has not been played for 6 or whatever months, a long time so if it was just a mule, it would not be deleted. Then maybe there would be a form where some one could request that name. No purging. Maybe if there was also a way to see the names of all characters on a certain account, so you could contact the person who owns that name.
