Boxing

Can anyone either tell me how to box, or send me to a link that shows how. I have always wondered how to do it but everything im finding on google talks about boxing but now how to unless they are multiboxing.

1. Start SoD, log in to your first char.
2. Either on a different or the same computer, start SoD agin, log in to your second character. Using EQWindows will be best if you are using the same computer.
3. Box away. If on same computer you can alt+tab between windows or assign a different key combo to switch, in eqw.

There are a LOT of threads on the forum for techniques on boxing. Look them up and find some tips that will undoubtedly help you right off. You'll end up developing your own style as you progress, but it's nice to see what others have done before you.

I started SoD like you and dove in the deep end on boxing.

I have to say it's something you learn best along the way, i didn't even know what alt+tab was (i used ctrl alt delete for like the first 3 levels, good lord).

/follow hotkey is your friend, as well as setting one UI to say all red and another to blue to avoid confusion (pulling with the healer = bad, but happens  ).

/assist, /pause xx, /cast x, /assist is good for a 'target tank/ melee's enemy, cast something on it(or set pet to attack) then go back to the tank/ melee target type deal. I grew up as a Sk/ shaman so it was my lazy 'pet attack, ready to heal' hotbutton. I'm kind of assuming you know about hotbutton macros lol :p

I'd highly recommend change the EQW key to switch clients to something like ` instead of using Alt-Tab. It's quicker and easier, and avoids 99% of the keyboard bugging out. You can set that in the eqw.ini file (in the eqw folder beneath where you have the patcher), in the [Hotkeys] section, add:

EQWSwitch=`

Keyclone isn't a macro app, standalone it simply will send a key pressed to another window. Totally aware of not automating anything. Keycloner is a 1:1 connection for keystroke to another window.

It is a similar app to that if isboxer but w/o all of the WinEQ stuff. Simply allows you to hit something like the F14 key on your keyboard to send a command over to your other eqwindow that might be Heal4. Will not automate anything like shooting an arrow or someone who would be setting up a joystick with an autoshoot or anything.

Was just looking for a more efficient way to do certain things when boxing. Movement will always be a pain, but some of the tabbing back and forth could be remedied by something like this.

Guess a better question would be is ISBoxer allowed here? EQWindows is ok, but would love something a little more up to date to work better with some of the new OS's.

Considering it can send a single keypress to multiple windows...I am leaning towards it also being a big fat nono.

I could be wrong about this, but I would be suprised.

They made boxing here easy enough by allowing it. Making it any easier for those who purchase third party software does not seem to be inline with anything I have seen supported by Staff here. Ever.

Would agree with you, just don't see it as being a big advantage other than it would allow you to control your one pc from your other window without having to tab over. I have never used it but I thought that with all of the issues I have had with eqwindows and the thought of changing my OS soon that I might want to look into something different and those are the only things out there really that aren't eqwindows.

You should wait to hear from a Staff member about this, but saying its not an advantage or much of one I can not agree with even slightly.

Not having to alt/tab or free up the cursor to access another pane (or whatever) to perform actions on a second character seems a very clear advantage over a person using the currently supported tools.

If you do not hear from Staff in this thread you may wish to ask the question in the Policy Questions (or whatever it is called) thread to get some kind of a decision or answer. I would highly recommend not using any such programs until you do get a response though just in case they are not permitted third party applications.

Oh, I won't even try anything unless one of the admin's were to say it's ok. Thanks for your feedback on the question. I will wait to hear from one of the admins on what they think about WinEQ, ISBoxer, and Keyclone.

Took at a look at the way the app is built. Would have to make changes to it to work with SoD for sure, just based on the client being updated to the most recent one. Not worth it, but would like to know if there are any issues with keyclone and if the newest version of EQWindows (2.47) is supported.

So it automates switching from one window to another, pressing a key, and switching back.... That is automation.

From the rules:

Any third-party programs that is designed to alter the client, sniff or alter the data communication between client and server, or automate any task within the client are expressively forbidden.

All the programs discussed here are most certainly third-party programs designed to automate a task with the client, and are thus forbidden.

Good answer Guardo but I just want to make sure we are on the same page.

This is a little different than what you used in your reply:

I hadn't thought of that as an actual task within the client and more of a product of using EQWindows to run said client.

Good stuff though, will leave it at that and thank you for your input.
