Bounty Hunter

The sad fish is a reactionary creature; an enemy o
Basically my idea is this: The addition of an NPC bounty hunter you can pay to track down and potentially kill other players.

Now here are some catches:
1) Each time you assign a bounty to a player the next bounty cost for that player is incrementally increased by a large amount.
2) No exp debt incurred by bounty hunter death
3) There is a grace period between being able to send a bounty hunter out after a player again
4) Bounty Hunter takes time and some forewarning is provided to target
5) Possibly some method to buy out your death warrant
6) The bounty hunter can't enter raid zones or 6-man zones to pursue players. Maybe the bounty hunter also says who hired him, I don't know.

What's the point? Some of you are probably saying what's the point, this is just griefing players. To a degree it is but then I suppose if you haven't raised anyone's ire you won't need to worry about it will you. Civility through threat of punishment on a street level. The reality is there is very little recourse in this game when dealing with stupid or awful people aside from ignoring them and this would give you a real but limited way to punish them, if timed correctly this could disrupt their experience group or just inconvenience them in some minor way.

I know some people dislike the idea of their impunity to be terrible being taken away or have a well deserved reputation finally come crashing down on them but I think this could be a very cathartic addition to the game as well as a fantastic plat sink. When looked at briefly it seems kind of like an evil little idea but we're already trying to assassinate each other with words constantly, this might actually even alleviate that by providing a tangible outlet for aggression between players.

Discuss.

I would definitely say that having a purpose made outlet for hostility between players would be far better than the weak or irritating means available at the moment. Developers having control of an outlet for gamer-rage sounds like a great thing, with potential to even turn some hostility into an overall positive encounter.

I could also see all current and future hostilities continuing without missing a step and our human nature just using this as an extra special turd to sling at whatever makes us mad.

Either way it would be fun to try, especially if I stood any chance at defending myself from the bounty hunter.

Yeah I would definitely want players to be able to have at least a chance to defend themselves via either prowess or cash.

You... Draeos... Arcibu... wow... I'm 3 names in and already I'm thinking this would last for months.

But say the cost started at like 2500pp then doubled each subsequent time! In three possible deaths you could remove 17.5kpp from the server!

Bounty hunters sounds like a nice twist in the game. More like hiring an assassin though in reality.

Would be nice to send an assassin after that guy who kept KSing me the other day.

Or the guy who pops in and snipes your named that you been trying to get to pop all day.

Or the spammer in ooc who thinks he's witty...

But how to regualte something like this? If you make it cost a lot then only the rich will ever use it.

Maybe make it a quest of some sort, you do something for the assassins guild and they do something for you. Or both quest and cash required.

And how to make the bounty hunter actually stand a chance at success over some t8+ players?

One thought I did have tho... instead of the bounty hunter announcing who sent him, I think it would be interesting to require you to point out the target to the bounty hunter. Target your victum and type something like /cm assassinate

I do not give a shit about this idea one way or another but I hate the fucking name so much. Do not call it bounty hunter. We had bounties on the wiki as any of the misc item collection quests. And now we have Bounting Hunting in Thurgadin. No more bounty-thing! Ok?! NO. Too confusing! Call it "Hire a guy to kill a guy" for all I care but not Bounty-thing.

*huff puff*

If a guy is enough of an ass to KS you or whatever, he is enough of an ass to send an assassin after you just because he can (or because you sent one after him first). I don't see what this would add other than petty revenge (that goes both ways).

this reminds me of those random high level mobs in low level zones (like sand giants in oasis, griffons in E. Commons) that just show up randomly and totally ruin your day.

It should be a voluntary type thing, like only pvp flagged characters can be targets or send one out and you cant disable your pvp flag for like 5-10 hours of /played time after you start the assassination mission (so you can be the target of one also. Being assassinated or another pvp flagged player killing you would also unflag you for pvp early (this would be the "grace" period in #3 and would last as long as you wanted).

A voluntary thing? Bah. Thats no fun.

If it's a voluntary thing nobody will do it.

But you could reverse it...

The Assassins Game:

The assassins guild challenges you. You sign up for a challenge. The challenges could range from easy to hard. The harder the challenge the higher the entry fee.

Once you sign up, within a certain time frame the guild will send an assassin after you, somewhere in an xp zone. (Cant hide in cities)

If you lose, you lose.
If you win, you could win money, prizes, even tokens kind of like the current bounty system in Thurg to buy stuff with.

This could be interesting...

Certain rules would have to be followed. Like, if any helps you fight the assassin you lose automatically, stuff like that.

its also no fun if every time your grace period is up you get ganked.

if you want to have the fun of assassinating someone, you also make yourself a target.

I've been killed by the bounty hunter in newport more times than I care to count...also who wants to play a game where you /cm d# an npc to play for you? Ugh to you sir. Ugh.

I initially thought the op was talking about paying to have a pvp flag forced on someone else, if only to be pvpable with the person who paid, and I thought it was a really cool idea. Not so much on the npc doing it part.

Beyond just 'I'm gonna go kill that dude,' It'd be a cool way to get player interaction cross tiers. Ex: a group/raid/battalion of mid tier people decide they don't like dimmi today, and go try to gang up on him and either get slaughtered or get a cool fraps video. Play around with plat filters to keep fwf/rich folks from griefing the entire server, and I could see it being a really cool feature.

This is a completely retarded idea.
Why?

I had some further ideas on this.

You have your choice between NPCs to hunt someone down. They could have some special abilities related to their archetype ie: you can hire Tony the Hatchet who is a rogue and will employ stealth when approaching etc or maybe you can hire Mikal the Mad Wizard who does AE damage letting you tailor who you send after the target.

ALSO

Perhaps if the person successfully defends themselves they'll receive a small fraction of the money you paid to try and kill them adding insult to injury and making it a little more interesting.

Not so much on the npc doing it part.
The problem with PVP is that it's shitty/unbalanced and you can just log off or sit somewhere nobody can find you.

If a guy is enough of an ass to KS you or whatever, he is enough of an ass to send an assassin after you just because he can (or because you sent one after him first). I don't see what this would add other than petty revenge (that goes both ways).
Hire someone to kill him for KSing you

Don't be rediculous stral, everybody loves dimmi all the time....until you posted THAT the idea of the post was the silliest thing in this thread =O

The price and it's curve for highly used names could drop. Commonly shared and passed along ringers might become unplayable.

Depending on if there was an expiration on the contract that unplayability would just coincide with the jerk-ness of the current player(s), then level back out.
