Books, books, and more books.

I would like to say beforehand that perhaps this is a horrible idea and perhaps impossible but with the request for more books I began thinking about this and wondering if it were possible to implement a new sort of.. "tradeskill" that revolved around book pressing.

The idea I have is that for a sum that is somewhat prohibitive (to stop an influx of worthless garbage in the database) you can take a book that you have written and have plates created, and then these plates can be used to create copies of that book. Each copy would have some feature that would automatically sign the creators name so if anything questionable appears we know who to pin it on. But I think this would open up some very neat avenues for people with a gift for writing, people could make money selling novel series for a modest sum (to recoup the cost of duplicating the book in part) or characters could commission writers they like to even write stories about them. I think this could result in some great works of fiction. It could also be used for guild charters or things I imagine, if a guild was so inclined.

So there you have it. Is that an interesting idea/even possible?

Well, its an interesting idea..

With the way that book items need to be created (a book/note item is an entry in the item database that also pulls its text from a separate file) I'll be honest with you, I don't know that it's actually possible to create books in game. Making an entire tradeskill out of it is most likely beyond the realm of possibility.

However, if you HAVE a book written, and want to see it in game, check here http://forum.shardsofdalaya.com/index.php?topic=13991.0

Darn, I thought that was probably an issue. The only thing that made me wonder if it was possible were the old bulletin boards in places like the S Newport in that I remember but as to whether the text for that was downloaded to client side or what I don't know. I wasn't sure if it was possible to create an item in the database via a quest which is probably what would be required.

It's all way above my head but I thought maybe it was worth checking out.

As Ikaa said, the way books work is twofold. On one hand, it probably could be possible to create the text for a book in-game, but the book item itself has to have that data applied to the server as well, so best case scenario is that you'd have your book created the next time the server is rebooted, since it requires a server reboot to introduce new items/change items.

It's a very cool idea, but one that currently wouldn't be possible to implement without it being severely limited.

I read the above suggestion and response and was wonering the following:

If the book needs a server reboot to be introduced into the world, you could perhaps implement it as a "Publishing time period" or something of that nature? I'm not sure how server reboots are done, however, and just wanted to try to make this work =D

If in some remote fantasy this is actually a possibility, AND we decided to ever implement it, it would probably be the last thing to ever be worked on.

1 because it would take a LOT of coding to implement a wholly new tradeskill, especially one that creates new items, instead of combining existing ingredients into an existing finished product.
2 because its likely to be used very little for the time put into it, which makes no sense from a return on investment standpoint.
3 I can already imagine it being taken advantage of, and having a thousand different books pressed with nothing but the word "BEWBS" just for lols sake, which would mean we would have to monitor everything that is sent for publishing, which is not all that different from the current way of doing things.

So for the time being
