Where do i get something decent to work with for armor and a weapon. I am a newb Barb SHM. I am not looking to twink, but i am looking to find a quest or fruitful hunting ground to equip my nekkid Barb self. Any suggestions or pointers would be nicely appreciated.

Before doing any questing, Blackburrow, which is south of Halas, offers some chainmail drops. Warrens near Erudin also offers chainmail drops as well. There is a quest in Wyvernfang where you gather molds and materials to craft armor as well.

You might try searching for the word "wyvernfang" in the Wiki.

In my opinion, the next big jump would be playercrafted Wyrmhide or Wyvernhide armor.
 
Even if you don't get chainmail drops, it's actually worthwhile to buy it from the vendors in SoD because it isn't priced stupidly high. My newbie warrior earned enough from selling dropped gnoll leather and weapons to be in full chain at level 12. Most veteran EQ players don't even bother to look at the armor vendors because they expect EQ Live prices.
 
I would recommend not buying armor from NPC vendors. You will find the drops almost faster than you will find the money, in my experience. Leather is a very common drop from Blackmaw gnolls, and about the time you have a full set of it (a few hours of xp'ing) you will start to find some chain drops, etc. The warrens follow the same pattern.

I would save your money for real upgrades that you won't be able to farm for yourself within a few levels. But that's just me.
 
The leader of the Sludgepaw Gnolls found deep within Newport's sewer system is known to be a shaman who carries a magic spear that a low level could benefit from... you may want help though since the gnolls are in their teens I think. Soft Leather is dropped down here which has 1 or 2 points less AC than normal leather but has some stats.
