I play Arma2 / Operation Arrowhead. Loooove that game! But that's the only shooter I like these days. I'm pretty burned out by the usual run and gun ones.
I think so, it wasn't when I bought it but I think I read that they made it free. I think the free version has some limitations like graphics textures and stuff. It's an amazing game online. The single player is pretty terrible but online is great. There is a mode called Capture The Island (CTI) which is just mind blowing, it never ceases to make me go :O
It also has amazing graphics if your PC is powerful.
p.s. If you don't mind waiting, Arma 3 is due next year sometime. There are some movies of it on the web, it's the number one game on my to buy list!
Word, thanks robot. My pc is pretty beasty, I can run Skyrim and MW3 on max settings. I will check into Arma2 later today. I would absolutely freaking love a good free-to-play FPS that wasn't just run n gun. I do, however, love the hell out of Q3: Arena still.
Wow Q3 I used to play that constantly, great game. Arma2 is pretty crazy, I hope you like it. I didn't like it at first because the controls aren't as straightforward as other FPS's. But I was playing lots of other shooting games and realised I wanted something more, so I gave it another shot. After a few days I was used to it and never looked back! It's basically a war simulator more than a FPS really.
The 'map' in the original game is 60 square kilometres by the way. It's totally epic. Although I play the expansion pack mostly, called Operation Arrowhead. The map in that is slightly smaller but the graphics are nicer and it runs better on my PC too (it is a desert map so less trees really helps). But I can never get over how amazing the game is. It's got all the infantry combat you can want but there are tank battles and choppers and jets too, and some of the game modes have lots of depth. In one of my first games in CTI, I was hovering over the battlefield in an Apache gunship, sending orders to troops on the ground (some AI and some real people), and I was watching it all happen beneath me in real time, with graphics that look almost like real life... and then when I see explosions I can fly down and help out. Once I saw all this I was hooked!
