Warning: What follows is mostly about mages since this possible change makes 4 of their spells potentially useless - this is not a bad thing imo....
Why don't we just require you have a mage in the group to cast the uber buffs? There goes the problems of mages getting groups... Yeah that's a terrible idea, though I do agree that in lieu of a mage, spending money to cast spells is ah...how you say... retarded?
Get rid of reagents or make them not a mage spell and add them to augurs. Then change those mage spells to summon tiny elemental pets that follow someone. The stipulation being that the mage must be in the person's group and if they leave that group, the pet goes poof after say 10 minutes (this accounts for the mage going LD or something). Let the pets be a few hours duration or so, but allow them to channel a spell proc through whoever they're cast on. Fire = stacking ds buff, water = self HoT/regen, air = electric dd proc, earth = "stoneskin" rune type shield (maybe this is not a proc, but cast every few minutes by the pet and instead is used by people not inclined to melee). Each proc maybe only lasts 4-5 ticks?
It would make mages more group desirable, still give them utility and keeping with the flavor of the class, while eliminating one of the main reasons they get relegated to buffbot status.
Yes, this isn't a mage thread, but the idea of ditching reagents shouldn't be considered without them... and if that changes, mages need something else in return.
Full disclaimer: I have a 65 mage that I *mostly* use for summons and buffs these days.
