About the Wiki

I know the SoD Wiki is a project independent of the staff that runs SoD, but I didn't know how to contact the creator/maintainer of it, thus this thread.

I spent a good deal of time tonight searching out and fixing random crap thats getting posted there by script kiddies trying to raise the google ranking of various webpages (porn, porn, viagra, more porn). When I was convinced I had finally gotten most of the damage repaired, I clicked recent changes to see that as I was fixing stuff, the script bots were hard at work breaking it.

Implementing some form of captcha security would stop 99.9% of this from happening. (see http://www.captcha.net/ for an example)

According to the Wiki's about page, it's driven by MediaWiki. The plugin required is FREE and HERE -> http://recaptcha.net/plugins/mediawiki/

PLEASE DEAR GOD someone get ahold of the Wiki creator and have this implemented asap!

This is from the main page:

"If anyone has anything they need to contact me for, email me at [email protected] and hope the junkmail filters don't pick it up and bury it with loads of junk."

:tinfoil: Oh... well I feel dumb.

No need to feel dumb...it was just kind of stuff into a big run-on paragraph anyway. :)

Thanks for doing some clean up.

Well, I dropped him an email, but it looks like he hasn't been active for about 11 months.

I've been trying out different free wiki servers just in case, but nothing free has the same quality + ad-free + the security I'd like.

*shrugs*

http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Gaming seems to be the best so far (looked at about 30, list still going), but it has ads.

Most (not all I said most) any wiki's that you find that are ad free is being hosted by a person on their own web-host account. Someone that has some space and bandwidth would have to install a wiki and let SOD users use it.

yes...Ive been cleaning out the porn as well......pretty much everytime I go to look something up I see porn links...... So anything to block them would be great. ;)

A side note, when you do clean up spam, find a good history to restore from. And it helps me greatly if you put Spam edit, spam, something in the "summary" box in the bottom, so I know it's a good restore (saves me from clicking five or six pages if you didn't set an account). I know Aoi, Wesell, Rokusho, and some others usually do it, but some haven't been. ;)

I tried this several weeks ago, just asking him to configure it such that the user was required to log in before editing since most of the SPAM comes from unregistered access. I never received a response back. :(

Oh man this would be nice i'd like to say whatever youve been cleaning i've been cleaning off wiki just as much...

it's messy :psyduck:

Good news guys! :toot:

From the Wiki-masta:
Thanks for the info. I'll see what the deal is this weekend, I don't believe there are many restrictions on anything the server is running, so it should be possible. Also, it may be better to send emails to me at this address (<deleted to prevent spam>) as the webmaster email address is very flooded with spam, and even checking it once a day means sifting through 400 emails or so. Thanks again.

So we should just have to keep it clean for a little while longer and we won't have to worry about it anymore.

Awesome news for me because I don't have to learn how to use CSS to format a new Wiki.
Bad news because now I don't have any motivation to learn CSS.

This is very good news because I was getting sick of having to clean up the garbage as well. Would really suck to be on one page, move to another then hit the back button and find that the page I was just on JUST got overwritten with gay child porn sites.

Would you mind PMing me his new email address?

yeah no acct, but just search aisling and you should get my edits, most of mine so far have been spam articles cleared. Not quite sure how to delete them entirely so the article remains.

You mean how to delete the spam, and bring the old contents back?

Nope, just the article. Like someone puts a new article CRUSHER 499$ FROM SHIVACO! filled with spam. Article is worthless, no related topic, etc. But still is on the wiki. Last time I was there, 2 or 3 of them were in most recent changes. Cleared em, just can't poof the article.

You have to have sysop privs to delete articles. It'd be great if we could get someone active to have the Bureaucrat tag (master permissions for Mediawiki) and get a few sysops appointed to help clean up the mess.

so if I was to make a new page to test out a new format, i could never get rid of it, just only blank it out?
