1017 Questionaire, please reply in case of 1017 error

Foonie

Staff Emeritus
This is for you if AND ONLY IF:
You select server at the server select screen and then it does NOT load but instead gives you 1017 error.

This is NOT for you IF:
You only receive the 1017 error once in a while (i.e. you need to receive it A LOT (i.e. if it just started happening, it's not for you)).
You can get the splash loading screen loading (EVEN IF IT DOESN'T MAKE IT ALL THE WAY TO CHARACTER SELECT)

Do NOT reply if you haven't attempted:
1) Turning off your firewall.
2) Changing your datarate. (This is done in datarate.txt in your the Game folder)
3) Rebooting

1017 Error is NOT "EQGame has made an error blablabla crash". It's an error that says 1017 error and then some stuff about running patcher.

The rules of the thread:
Do not post anything in this thread but answers to the questions. Discussion will be in a completely different thread.
Do not post if you do not feel like giving up the information in the post.
Do not post if you have not attempted fixing this, by, for instance, read the other posts regarding this, and following some of the advices.

Now paste you dbg.txt file to the end of the entry showing the part where the error is seen.

1.Version of Windows (including any service packs and exact version e.g Windows XP home edition SP 2):

Windows XP home edition (not sure of SP)

2.Firewall in use. Did turning it off give any apparent effect at all:

Windows Firewall. I have tried turning off and or allowing sod, no luck.

3.Router (If any) and firmware version:

No router. Direct hook-up.

4.Type of graphics card/Driver version:

Radeon x600 mobile. Not sure on the driver version, its in the other post.

5.Processor type and amount and type of computer memory (e.g. Athlon 3500+, DDR PC3200 2x512Meg):

Pentium 4 Processor 1.86 Ghz. 1x512 MB

6.Type of internet connection (if possible with ISP) and country:

Highspeed 10 mbps connection. I am on campus so I share the connection with lots of other people. Not sure of ISP. I live in Canada.

7. Does logging on at different times of the day reduce or increase the error:

Yes, however it is not related to the traffic of SoD. It is related, however, to the traffic of users online at my school. During peak hours at my school I am never able to connect to SoD.

8. Have you tried logging on on another computer in your location or elsewhere

I havent tried logging in on another computer in my area. However, I can login perfectly fine when I go home for the weekend, that is on my laptop (same computer I play on at school, or on my desktop at home)

9. Any filesharing background programs running or installed (please include which):

Only filesharing program installed is DC++. Never have it running when I play though.

10. How long have you had this problem:

Since I moved into residence at school. About 7-8 months.

11. Which steps have you taken to fix this:

All the fixes included in the 10 page long thread as well as any other random suggestions. (changing datarate, playing fullscreen, reinstalling/repataching all, etc.)

12. Other. Anything you've noticed or feel is relevant to the error.

Think this is somehow due to internet connections and timeout procedure of the server. No idea really though.

The questions:

1.Version of Windows (including any service packs and exact version e.g Windows XP home edition SP 2):
Windows XP Pro SP2

2.Firewall in use. Did turning it off give any apparent effect at all:
I have tried with ZoneAlarm on and off

3.Router (If any) and firmware version:
Linksys Wireless B (BEFW11S4) Firmware Version: 1.52.02
Ports Fowarded: 5997, 9000, 7770-7794, 7950-8091

4.Type of graphics card/Driver version:
MSI Geforce 4 TI4800SE Driver verison: 8.4.2.1

5.Processor type and amount and type of computer memory (e.g. Athlon 3500+, DDR PC3200 2x512Meg):
AthlonXP 2800+ 1Gig DDR Ram, I forget the speed and brand, its been almost 4 years

6.Type of internet connection (if possible with ISP) and country:
Verizon DSL, Philadelphia PA

9. Does logging on at different times of the day reduce or increase the error:
I'll try later tonight. Update 3:45am: No difference.

10. Have you tried logging on on another computer in your location or elsewhere:
Not an option.

11. Any filesharing background programs running or installed (please include which):
None running.

12. How long have you had this problem:
Ever since I can remember. But now I can't log in at all.

13. Which steps have you taken to fix this:
Changing datarate.txt to 5.0 then 14.0.
Reran EQ patcher then installed SOD manual files.
I've tried the 5e error fixes without any success.
Resetted computer/router/modem.
Removing Router, and going straight through modem.

14. Other. Anything you've noticed or feel is relevant to the error.
I've just noticed using netpeeker that Eqgame.exe is changing the listening ports each time I press play. First time it was 1449 and 1450, then 1595 and 1596 then 2 others. None of which are on the forward ports list. I'm thinking maybe that me continuously hitting play might result in finally hitting one of my forwarded ports. I'm trying to set port forwarding on the ports listed, but its not working because each time I hit play I get new ports. Edit: nevermind set a range to cover new ports, no change.
I ran a speed test and currently its at 432kbps, my max is 1.5mbps, being close to holiday is alarming, but my friend can log on fine with 56k. Update: Full speed no difference.
Sometimes when I click play, I get kicked back to the SOE screen. Then when I log back in before server select screen I get the 1017 error.
There is no net activity when I try to connect to servers.
I had problems running the patcher so I tried the fixes without success. Then I installed using manual files, afterwards the patcher ran fine on its own.

Now paste you dbg.txt file to the end of the entry showing the part where the error is seen.

I was playing for about 20 mins. Zoned out of Grobb into the swamps and it froze up...never letting me zone. Had to ctrl+alt+del to shut the game down. After trying to log back in it kept giveing me the error and not even letting me into the character select. So I tried to log into my other account that my gf uses and I got to the character select screen but it froze up again while trying to enter the game..it just sat at the loading screen and playing music for about 10 mins and I had to ctrl+alt+del out again. Tried also to have the patcher repatch all but that didnt help either.

Problem: Error 1017 used to happen about 40% of the time, and happened less if my ping time went under 1000ms. After I downloaded the new patch (24 nov 2007) Error 1017 happens 100% of the time, even when my ping time gets down to 750ms.

Homogenn said:
This is for you if AND ONLY IF:
You select server at the server select screen and then it does NOT load but instead gives you 1017 error.

check.

Homogenn said:
This is NOT for you IF:
You only receive the 1017 error once in a while (i.e. you need to receive it A LOT (i.e. if it just started happening, it's not for you)).
You can get the splash loading screen loading (EVEN IF IT DOESN'T MAKE IT ALL THE WAY TO CHARACTER SELECT)

check, no splash loading screen.

Homogenn said:
Do NOT reply if you haven't attempted:
1) Turning off your firewall.
2) Changing your datarate. (This is done in datarate.txt in your the Game folder)
3) Rebooting

check.

Homogenn said:
1017 Error is NOT "EQGame has made an error blablabla crash". It's an error that says 1017 error and then some stuff about running patcher.

After pressing PLAY it waits ten seconds, returns to the intro page, gives <theCompany> screen, ESRB rating, and then the main menu (connect account credits options exit). Clicking connect then gives me the login page (uname already there, pass empty). Logging in displays the server select screen with error 1017 on top.

2.Firewall in use. Did turning it off give any apparent effect at all:
ZoneAlarm picked up eq as a trusted program and allowed it to run as a server. Shutting ZoneAlarm down caused my computer to warn me that I have no firewall protection. No effect on the disconnect... dbg.txt log entries were identical to using it with ZoneAlarm on.

While attempting to connect (and running ping in another window in the background) I noticed the ping command stops receiving data and outputs "Request timed out." until it returned to the intro screen.

also, prior to the 24 nov 2007 patch, I was able to connect when my ping was in the 700's. Second or third try, guaranteed.
