WTB Patch Messages

Where have they been lately? For the last patch there wasn't even anything on the boards about it. I'm sure people who can't use IRC for whatever reason would like to stay in the loop. Also, it's nice to know if something happens concerning other classes....for example when Brusco's Bellow got changed it would've been cool to know about it before hacing to expiriment with it. I know everybody is hard at work, but 5 mins to make a little message = better customer service = more donors.

I could be wrong but what was recently patched was more "behind the scenes" type stuff, and not anything most players would have even noticed being added in game anyways. Hence the lack of patch notes.

There have been some pretty big "front end" changes as well, such as the raid window and the death/rez effect changes that never came out in a patch message. I agree with Jay that we don't need to know all the details of everything that changes, but even a couple high level bullets of things to look for/look out for would be great. I'm one of those people who camp the main page from work just to see what exciting things I'm missing out on that I have to look forward to. =P

Also, I must admit when I first came to SoD I looked over the front age and said to myself "Wow, they are making lots of improvements and patch frequently" I'd hate it if another person came here and didn't get that impression because there is always tons of things going on. I'm not asking about the behind the scenes stuff...and I'm not asking to say "Erudin Palace got pathing. Catacombs got pathing. Erimal got pathing" but atleast give me something!

There have been some threads with some changes posted for example some quest changes Xeldan did - http://www.shardsofdalaya.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8377

Ya i know Wiz hasn't updated the mainpage patch news yet, but he is probably just working himself til he is too tired to do anything else, not sure of course, just know that when im working on a project i get that way, like when i used to write the scripts for quests when i played SWG i would just be focused on it so much that i would usually have to stop cause i was exhausted.

But anyways i agree with Jay, seems like most the recent work has been "behind the scenes" so there wasn't much need for notes to be posted =)

Basically the only thing added in the patch yesterday was backend stuff to allow us to implement proper mob pathing in zones so they don't warp/run through walls to get to you. They'll now properly follow pathing that we can now set up in zones. That's why some zones have been unavailable for a bit over the last day or so as we get them plotted out with the pathing points.

I'm sure everyone will be excited to know that this new system Wiz designed and implemented yesterday will allow us to get zones set up to use fear much, much faster than previously. So that's another bonus to look forward to thanks to the backend stuff added.

But as a normal user, I *AM* intrested in the backend stuff. For instance, as a monk, lets say I want to go solo. Hmm, geomancers in faentharc woods are a perfect lvl, all melee, ok, I can do this. I go over to Faentharc, start fighting. Ok, this one is almost dead... starts running away. Its ok, since I pulled out of the caves. Next time though, I fight inside the cave. It runs through the walls this time... Ok this sucks, but I can still run outside and wait for it to pop outside the wall. Then I think, hmm, for all the mobs on the inside of the caves, if they get into the walls, ill never be able to kill it. Hmm, I have to move somewhere else, because I cannot do this without a rooter or a pet class. So I scratch geos off my list of places I can go solo.

Meanwhile, the next day wiz goes in and fixes faentharc's pathing...

If I never know about it, im not going to go back to faentharc. Ill find some other place to go... but I really wish I could of done geos cause all mellee as a monk is way prefered.

If we had a small patch message that *Today zoning was fixed for *X* zones*, I would be able to find out about the stuff.

This story was just about pathing....

But for instance, the new "Rez doesnt restart death fatigue" it helped one of my guildies clerics out. He was feeling pressured to start working on the lifeward shield. He rather get the shield of newport or whatever it is. Cause before the ninja patch, if raid wiped, clerics got back, waiting for their death fatigue to wear, med to full, rez 10ish people, med to full, repeat till raid is back, then rez themselves up, wait for death fatigue, med to full, start cleric buffs, etc etc etc.

With rez changes, they can rez themselves up first, cause death fatigue wont hit em again, removing one of the "wait for death fatigue, wait for mana" out of the equation, which was just enough to make our said cleric decide he really didnt need to do lifeward, and get the shield he wanted...

He only found out on accident that rez doesnt restart death fatigue..

If we had a small patch message saying "Today rez no longer restarts death fatigue" he could of found out about it without stumbling onto it by accident.

We dont need true back end stuff. Lets say how raid data is stored in memory and was changed today, or anything like that. But if it affects play at all, it would be very nice to have a small patch message...

Personally, I'd rather Wiz keep working his code-God mojo, and have to figure the stuff out from /ooc, IRC, or experimentation. Knowing about it would be nice, but if typing a patch message takes even 5-10 minutes of Wiz's time away from coding, I'd rather just not know about it. Pathing fixes, no death effects reapplication on rez, etc... all of this is good news. The problem is that writing patch messages is boring... I used to write "what's new" documents for a software company... I was paid to do it and still hated it; I think if you try to keep up with things by talking in IRC sometimes, asking on /ooc and reading the forums, you get a pretty good idea of what has been done...

For instance, I now know about death fatigue not being reapplied... sweet. :) Thanks for the headsup.

Bleh... theres no reason not to take 10 minutes to write an overview of significant changes. Like stated above, its part of what makes our gaming community so appealing. Communication.

If Wiz can't do it maybe one of the other GM could. If not right after the patch, post it the next day. If not in game, on the boards. Patch messages are important, IMHO. No one likes to be left guessing if something is a bug or a feature after a patch.
