Windows 98se Machine locking up

I"m not upgrading to a different operating system so before someone gets "smart" and suggests one, it's not going to help.

I noticed that shortly after one of the windows updates i did, IE 6.0 and Firefox will lock up my pc. This ONLY happens right after I run Winters Roar / EQ.

As an example, I boot up my machine. I go to Winters Roar patcher and actually get into EQ. I log into a character. I log out and go to desktop. I click on IE or Firefox and it just hangs there. I have to physically shut down my pc to get it restarted/unlocked.

The odd thing is I can play Winter's Roar just fine after I close it out.

I've tried searching the web on this issue but I"m coming up dry. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

this machine is cleaner than a virgin's honeypot.

that's why i'm stumped. it has something to do with something the WR patcher is doing that is causing my pc to basically crash when attempting to read web pages.

interesting.... it's not a memory issue is it?

to be sure try running eqplay nice and see if you still get the issues

also, what os are you running on, include the service packs you are up to.

eqplaynice does not help.

if this statement helps diagnose it any further, i used to play EQ live on this very machine.

it's very probable that one of the window updates did this. just not sure how to check it.

if it is an update issue.. good luck - since anthing beyond 2000 is no longer 'offically' supported.

Why do you even want to run win98se ????
I sugest you upgrade your OS but you said you didn't want to, but please explain why you want to run the one you have.

i don't want to explain. sorry i know that sounds rude but all i want to know is why this is happening.

changing OS's is NOT an option at this time.

It sounds like something (a process) isn't closeing like it should and takeing up the cpu time so you can't start another program. I sugest again that you upgrade your OS if you want to solve this issue as I'm sure it's a win98 issue. That's the only explenation (spelling) I have and only solution.

can anyone provide me with a more viable solution?

once again, changing OS's is NOT an option. i want to solve the problem, not get rid of it.

My only thought is to run a scan for Spyware/Adware using either Ad Aware or the new Microsoft Antispyware software (it's really good, believe it or not). As for being clean...I try to keep my system clean, but those tools routinely dig up stuff that's been installed on my computer from who knows where, so just give it a try.

Regards,

Wany

scan has been completed several times. also performed a hijackthis and nothing odd is in there.

any other suggestions?

Storm,
Try using "Process Explorer" ... it routinely finds processes running that Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't. Some of the more insidious processes are difficult to find and this one does it. I, also, run WIN98SE and I like it !!
