Hello!
I am new to SoD and don't know much about EQ. So I was wondering if I could get some input on what kind of character I should make?
I know you're probably going to say "just do whatever you like" but I have no idea what is good or bad or what is useful, etc. and would really love to get some opinions on the matter.
I usually like to play classes that are the most sought after in groups since I like to play with others more than solo, however I'm not sure if there is a lot of grouping in SoD or not...is there? Or will I just be spending most of my time solo'ing whether I like it or not?
Also, where is a good place to start out where there will be the most people around? I don't like being lonely!
Thanks.
There's a fair amount, but you might not see much of that until you start to make connections in game, as going lfg always tends to blow. People tend to form groups privately with others they know first, and pick up pubs as a last resort. This is a little different pre-65 of course.
It really depends on what you're planning to do later. If you're planning on raiding, tank is a poor choice to do alone. They are sought after for groups and such, however the likelihood of getting a raid slot later on with a tank is slim to none, much of that being due to sod having an 18 man raid limit, and a hefty portion of those slots being necessary to be filled by healers.
As a cleric your chances are probably optimal, for both grouping, and raiding later on. Most raids tend to carry at the very least 2 out of necessity. Most carry 3. Leaving precious little slots for many other classes, but if you are a cleric, you're in luck.
Playing a healer is always an excellent idea really. If you decide to box (which is an excellent idea, it will not only give you the feel of another class, but you will learn a bit more about the game faster, as well as leveling, and farming faster), you're going to want one anyways. As I've already reccomended cleric, the rest is really wide open. Tanks are always pretty great to play a healer with. However you may want to look into some other things as well. The 2nd class depends much more heavily upon what you like, rather than just getting groups and such.
Mages, Necros, Beastlords, Warriors, Paladins, Sk's, Rangers, Monks, Bards, and to an extent rogues are all reasonably good ideas in different ways as a duo. Again as a tank your raid slots are going to be iffy if you wish to bring the other in to the raid game. With the exception of if you start your own guild. Other than them, the melee classes are probably your best bet. Monks rangers and bards, rogues are going to suffer from the lack of backstabby goodness, and do reasonable dps, however their tankability is not going to be even close to the others.
That being said, monks or bards will probably be the best with a cleric. Monks can split and make things drastically easier on you for duoing early on, and easier for your group (though they do not get this ability for a while). Bards have a metric ton of versatility and are pretty much required for 6 man content.
