What tank for a WIZ?

Hi all,

I am trying to get my friend into playing SoD, and he always likes to play the "glass cannon" type of character that can do TONNES of damage quickly, but is extraordinarily weak. For this reason, at least on Live, he would definitely go WIZ (if anyone has thoughts there may be a better character for him on SoD, let me know).

Anyway, I was hoping to play something that could tank for him so we could do a group of two when we wanted to. So something that can do decent DPS or at least taunt really well to try to keep mobs off the WIZ. I honestly don't think we will get him above level 30 before he gets bored and wanders off to the next shiny thing (so low to mid-level game focus), but who knows?

These will probably be mostly if not entirely untwinked.

Right now I'm thinking:

* Monk - pretty good DPS and ability to mitigate a moderate amount of damage.

* Paladin - pretty good AC and ability to taunt through abilities/spells. Moderately good heal.

* Druid - mob slow/stop with snare/root. Moderately good heal.

* Ranger - mob slow with snare, OK AC and DPS.

* Necro - pets have good DPS but unsure about ability to keep aggro. Would Fear work well for this?

Any suggestions on a class to help do a duo group with a wizard? Or is this just a bad idea all around? = )

thanks!

Wizards are the kings of burst damage on single targets.
Shadowknights are the kings of single target aggro.

So my suggestion would be to play a Shadowknight as a tank for a wizard, simply because both classes are somewhat specialized in dealing with single mobs. The SK's ability to FD split helps getting the targets single even more.

Also, since it is legal on this server to play 2 toons per player at a time, I'd STRONGLY recommend to get a healer in that mix, and if you both want to play 2 toons, go for bard as the last slot.

I know it's not quite what you are looking for, but Bards can make very good partners for wizards and are decent tanks due to wearing plate. The mana songs certainly help.

Pally is a good choice. It becomes a really good choice if you go to 65, but since you say that's unlikely, it remains merely a good choice.

Low level? I'd say necro or beastlord. These two classes solo very well, even untwinked. The bst pet could tank while the wizzy bombs away, or the necro could fearkite while the wizzy booms. Notice the playstyle for the wiz is always the same! Either one works very well. I leveled my first toon basically from 20-60 duoing with a necro bud of mine (before I figured out how to box effectively) and it was excellent.

Alternatively, as was stated, if you guys can box, I'd say go pally / druid / wizzy / bard and you will absolutely destroy everything ever.

Hi all!

Thanks for the advice!

I've never played a bard, beastlord, or SK very high - those are all awesome suggestions I never would have thought of!

I know boxing would make things a lot easier on us, but he's brand new to the game, and I just don't like to box (maybe I'm just lazy ;) ) so I was hoping for a two-shot deal to keep it simple.

So I'm now looking at Pally, SK, Bard, BST, or Necro.

I already have a few of these as mid-level chars, but barring me reading anything weird while researching, I'lll probably go Bard or BST. I fear carpal tunnel song twisting with Bards, but I know songs are different here from Live, so I'll have to check that out as well. The research continues ; )

Thanks all!

I love my combo of beast and wizzy, sure it is important to concuss a lot so wiz dont get aggro too much. But besides that, the combo is very nice imo.

Do you currently have a higher lvl char and are you able to twink the tank somewhat at all with better gear (nothing huge but something?) ?

If so I would suggest going with bard or beastlord. As a beastlord you get blind at lvl 9 and slow at lvl 22. Between these two spells and your high h2h dmg output you will be able to build and hold a lot of agro at these lower lvls, and if you twink with some decent gear you will be an awesome tank. Add to that great dps, and later on spells that adds to the wizards dps, + a pet that can offtank or tank (although it wont hold agro from the wizard).

As for bard you get a pbae dmg song at lvl 2 which can make for major fun if you twink, and will make the first lvls go by real quick. You get a pbae mez at 15, which ofcourse doesnt only help with agro control but also builds agro. new pbae dmg at 18 and a slow at 20. Ie you'll be able to get decent agro.

For the early lvls I wouldnt even consider a paladin. Especially not if you have the ability to twink the gear some.

If you dont intend to twink at all, I would go with a shadowknight for the single target agro at these levels. it will get you best agrocontrol vs the wizard. You dont get your first terror (unresistable agro spell) until lvl 34, but your agro output on single targets before then should still be better than that of the paladin here.

oh also, if you do end up going with the bard, you might want to have him consider a mage instead of the wizard.

I'm not sure how it works out in the lower levels, but an enchanter is an awesome compliment to a wizard at 65, especially after you have your relic spells. If you don't expect him to play long, you could end up with your own wizard/chanter for farming/ports/buffs that way too, lol....I'm not sure how well it would work doing wiz/enc from two different people though; it takes some close timing to pull it off effectively.

If you're a wizard without a beastlord alt/bot for cunning you're 80% of the wizard you could be!

Hi all!

I have a few alts and my main is only mid-level, so I may think about doing some slight newbie twinkage if necessary, but I really prefer to go untwinked when possible. Although to make a 2-combo work when necessary I am willing to bend some preferences = )

I appreciate the additional responses. Right now I am probably between the BST and the bard... time will tell = )

Thank you!!
