Actually, whether or not a type of weapon is 'better' for you depends on your skill. For instance, if you have 50 1HB skill and only 20 1HS skill, then a bashing weap would be more efficient / productive for you. If you had 50 1HB, 50 1HS, and 50 1HP skill, then you'd be equally effective with a weapon of any of those types.
What you spend your specialization points on also plays a role, though. On my warrior, I put a lot of points into Blade/Strike specialization. Because of that, my warrior is more effective with swords than with blunt weapons. (Blade/Strike effects 1hs, 2hs, 1hp, 2hp.)
Anyway... If you're level 12, your best bet is to just do what I did. Collect loots to sell to vendors from your exp groups and new gear will come around quickly. Heck, I used a pair of Mastercrafted Bastardswords until my Warrior was 15 or 16. MC weapons usually sell for a couple of platinum (1-3p) if people sell them in the auction channel. Some people are also pretty nice. A higher level character simply gave me the swords I used instead of selling them to a vendor.
Around level 12, you don't need to be worrying much about shopping for new gear. Do the best you can with what you get in groups and vendor loots. However, if a nice opportunity for an upgrade falls in your lap, don't be afraid to take advantage of it. Your level is about right for blackburrow groups, too, you know... the gnolls and what not, between Halas and Newport. There are a couple of named critters in there and if I remember right you can get a few nice low level items there.
My warrior's 25 now and I want to go back there to get the earring off the named fish
