Warrior Shielding

What exactly are the mechanics of Shielding?

Yesterday I was killing something and brought my 55 warrior along. Since he's pretty useless DPS I just had him shield Driizz while she rampage tanked. My questions are:

How much is damage reduced by shielding?
Does level affect how much damage is shielded?
Does the AC of the shield affect how well one shields?
Do any AAs affect how well one shields?
Would it be jailable to bring a lvl 55 warrior on a raid if all he did was /shield the MT every pull?

Thanks

While you have a shield equipped, your target gains a bonus to their block skill.

This used to be pretty problematic, meaning shield actually only worked on monks or when your target themselves had a shield equipped. This was fixed quite awhile ago in one of the numerous unpublished bug fixes we do most weeks.

Things to note:

  • The skill bonus is ~shield ac of the shielder * 2. So a 100AC shield grants a 200 skill block bonus
  • The shields effective AC for this calculation is actually run through the recommended level formula. Using a 65+ tank's shield to P-level a level 1 is pretty much a waste of time because of this
  • Block is avoidance, reducing the damage to 0. So while average damage reduction can be calculated, it'll vary from situation to situation, has quite a luck factor in the short term, and I'm not about to do it
  • Only 1 target can be shielded per warrior, and only 1 shielding can occur per person. You can have 2 warriors /shield 1 person. Whoops wrong about this!
  • We brought up over a year and a half ago, in private, a proposed revamp to shield to make warriors a bit more interactive, changing it into something of a damage splitter on the target that you could use to protect people with. We never got past the 'that would be cool lets prototype it' stage

ps: In regards to the posted thread, around this time we fixed the /shield bugs, we also fixed +block not doing anything for non-monks. Most defensive mods had the same issue, and they were likewise fixed.

And relooking at the code I think I'm wrong about the 1 limit for receiving the /shield. Looks like 2 warriors CAN shield the same target. Not sure if anyone has ever done that though.

OK that pretty much answered all of my questions. I guess I"ll have to buy sizzly a good shield if I want to /shield with him.

You can trashcan this

the answer is yes, 2 warriors shielding a paladin >_>

We did two warriors shielding a third warrior on Custodian a couple years ago. But other than that I don't know why anyone would ever need that much defense.
