Unable to connect to game server

Volkier

Well, I'm in a little bit of a dilemma.

Long story short, I can connect to the logon server, get to the server selection screen, but after that, I'm stuck. Whenever I try to connect to the server, I get the usual "checking server, connecting player etc." then the game acts like it's about to launch the 'loading screen' to get to the character select screen but after about 10 or so seconds, instead of the loading screen, I am smacked back to the "the Company" logo (right after the EULA) and the main menu - the one before you even log on.

Now what I have done to try and fix it:

- I have tried re-patching in various ways (manually removing files and editing the patch.txt, re-installing everything, copying over original Game files, etc.) with the SoD patcher
- I have tried manually editing the eqhost.txt (as suggested in another thread on the forum)
** Now the FIRST time I've done this, I actually got to the char select screen. So I did think that was the problem, although the IP addresses seem to be the same with the only thing differing being the format in which it was set out, however Game quit responding after I created the char and tried to enter the game. Any further subsequent attempts - despite trying everything humanly possible with that file - results in the same problem as above. This was also the ONLY time I've managed to get up to char select screen itself.
- I've removed all the custom UI files, and defaulted pretty much any and every single config file I could find.
- Fully disabled the hardware firewall on the router.
- Failing that, I went ahead and set my system up for DMZ host to bypass any other left-over forms of security that the router might have had - which potentially might have blocked some ports / IPs
- Shouted several vulgarities at the top of my lungs at my PC in 5 different languages, and burned 6 sheep corpses as a form of a sacrifice to attempt and appease the divine powers responsible.

What I haven't done:

- I haven't patched Game itself with the live patcher. As mentioned in my intro post, I don't have an active account since I've drowned in the spam of expansions and removal of features by the Company sometime at the start of 2007 (or the end of 2006?)
- I haven't set Game to run on a single core. From what I understand, and in my experience, dual core would cause other problems - plus it did get to char selection once. Oh, and the fact that Game tells me that I don't have access to set affinity for some strange weird reason - I'll get to trying to solve that one once I can actually get into the game - theres a few tricks in the 'dual core' topic which I can try.
- I haven't tried to see if the Game live itself works. Again, no active account.
- Anything which isn't relevant to the problem (obviously).

I'm sure I've missed stuff out, but if anyone has heard of something similar, and knows a fix, please do tell ::)

I think this issue can be caused by having some files in your game directory marked read only. People who copied their files from a CD often report an issue similar to this. Hope this helps.

Negative, doesn't seem to be the case. Everything was already 'non-read-only', and just to be sure, I've applied the checkbox to all and then un-checked it again. Still nada. I'm sure I haven't copied the files off the CD either - did a proper installed during the PoP era, and software purchases (download and install) for all the subsequent expansions.

Anything else that I can possibly try?

One thing you can try that might work, right click the shortcut that starts the game and choose properties.
Once there select Compatability and select one of the older windows version..got a friends dual core to work using this method.

I'm quite sure it's not the dual core issue, but I've tried that too and theres still no difference whatsoever. I get right up to the select server screen, hit 'enter', but instead of loading the character select screen I get smacked back to the very first menu ::*( I'll try it on my older laptop later on tonight to confirm it's not a dual core issue..

Well, I've tried connecting through direct connection bypassing the whole network on the property - same thing - so it's not the router settings.

I've tried it on my other laptop - which has a crappy single core processor (and on which I know for a fact I've ran EQ fine on) - again same problem.

Which brings me back to square one. No clue why I am getting this issue. Any help would still be appreciated, I am hoping that there is still a chance I could try this little gem out ::\

Im curious first what you are installing it from: the Titanium pack requires no patching to live, has everything you need out of the box.

You state you patched several different ways using the SoD patcher, i want to make sure you are aware that if you are not installing from titanium, and not patching to live, we dont distribute the EQ files, so if you are missing something required, the game wont run.

Set the processor affinity to one core. Though it causes other issues, normally graphical ones, you'll need to do it anyways, so theres no reason not to do so now (if it isnt still).

It isnt your host file, otherwise you would get error 1001 when you type in user/pass.

Barring missing files from an incomplete or nonsufficient install, im not sure what else to suggest.

It sounds to me like its your install - unless you are able to patch to the live servers you will need to find a fresh titanium install. I am almost positive that this is your issue.

I am experiencing the same thing..

I have been trying since Friday to get in and no luck. I have tried 3 different computers that all ran SoD fine for the past year or so. I click play from the server select screen, and it crashes eqgame.exe. I have tried all of the suggestions I could find on the forum, brought my laptop to 2 different coffee shops to try different networks and still no luck. I am getting ~45ms pings to the servers. I tried re-installing from titanium, patching, rebooting, and copying from other computers that run SoD, but it seems like something happened, and it is making me sad.

Here is the dbg.txt file from the last failure if that helps. Also, running single-core...

OK, solved my problem after all of that..

Turns out that when I left work on Friday, I had hit the button to exit SoD, and it had not logged me all the way out. I suppose I should have tried to login to a different account. Sorry about that.

I do believe I mentioned in the first post that I have been playing EQ since just before Luclin and until early last year - hence I have up to the later 12 (or was it 14?) expantions - not just the few that come with Titanium. Yes, I have bought all the expantions (though they probably spammed 10 more since I quit a year back), and yes I have been playing EQ on all of them. So I'm not actually installing from anything - I have EQ already installed with everything up to the time I quit. All the expansions

I have also managed to get into the game on ONE occasion - after which it froze for about 10 minutes after I created the char and tried to enter server (after which I obviously gave up).

Already tried setting the processor affinity. Also have tried running on an older laptop (which too ran EQ fine up until I quit) which has a single-core processor with exact same results.

Waldof Are you sure having more expansions than required may cause a problem? Like I said, EQ itself ran fine on it, but if you are as positive as you sound, I am more than happy to 'downgrade' (although I would have to buy the expansions included in Titanium again)

New zone files may be causing a crash after creating a character, but the OP post after logging in and getting booted to splash screen would be from low connectivity with the server

What does the client look like when you are logging in? The SoD client version will look like it did in gates of discord. Live has since overhauled its GUI and login UI, so this is also a possibility of fault. I do not think it is this, though, since you were able to create a character on one occasion.

The low connectivity would probably explain it most. I am on a satellite internet in NZ which is far from ideal - and has a few ping issues to certain servers and countries. I would have thought that would not be a problem since EQ worked on 56K (years back when it just came out and I still actually used that) and I'm quite sure the netcode did not change with the expansions - and as cruddy as my current satellite internet is, the download / upload speed is still significantly better.

Is there any way to check what the drop-out ping is for the SoD server? (Pinging 67.205.76.13 gives me an average ping of 1194 - shitty yes, but I wouldn't have thought EQ netcode couldn't handle that - especially since even mmo's like EVE work fine)

EDIT: And I honestly can't remember exactly what Gates of Discord login screen looked like, but I'm quite positive it looks like something along the time-line of when GoD came out.
