Two box set up help

Hi all. I am trying to two box and I can't get the second account to load. Is there a step by step guide explaining how to set this up? Are there files I have to edit or something else I have to do?

Ok, whipped up something for you real quick. I hope this is helpful.

BOXX BASICS
This part shouldn't be very confusing. You do not need anything to two box that you don't need to single box.

From this point on I'm assuming you've followed the installation guide and can run the game normally.

Run the patcher application twice. If you have a multi-core processor, tick the Bind Affinity to Processor option and set each client to it's own processor.

Now, you do not need to do anything but run click Patch and Run, then Start EQ through EQW.

Be sure you are using different accounts with each client - you can create as many accounts as you want, so if you only have one just make a second one.
(And otherwise you're breaking a rule and that is extrabad!)

MOAR

Now, the rest of this is a little advanced (just a little, I promise) and NOT necessary. However, it will make 2-boxxing easier!

EQW Hotkeys
I have Everquest installed in a non-standard location as you will see above; most people will find theirs in C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\Everquest (The (x86) part used only on modern operating systems running 64-bit installations) or C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Everquest\ for Steam installations. Once you find your folder, remember where it is!

Other than the folder location, your patcher should look like mine unless you are doing something other than running the client normally. Having EQW enabled is even more important for two-boxing, since it will allow you to switch between the windows without using alt+tab. It will also allow you to release your mouse and browse outside the client. Using alt+tab in either case tends to cause keyboard bugs or mouse freezing on character select.

You can modify (or at least view) the keyboard settings by browsing to ]C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\Shards of Dalaya\eqw. There are FOUR files in that folder. Right click on the one named eqw.ini and Open with... Notepad.

If you cannot tell which of the three files in that folder named eqw is the .ini because you don't have View extensions for known filetypes turned on, the file has a Type of Configuration settings and is the only non-application file that isn't a DLL. That should help you determine which one you are looking for!

This file is divided into three parts, but the part you will want to modify looks like this:

Code:
ReleaseMouse=Ctrl Alt R
ReloadIni=Ctrl Alt I
EQWSwitch=Ctrl Alt S

It is highly suggested you change that section to read:

Code:
ReleaseMouse=Ctrl Alt R
ReloadIni=Ctrl Alt I
EQWSwitch=`

You can then use the ~/` key (left of the 1 key on standard keyboards) to switch between your client windows quickly. I can't provide much assistance on other usable key combinations here, so if you want something else there I suggest experimenting with it yourself.

Wiki Reference.

EQ Playnice
EQPlaynice exercises cpu, framerate and rendering limitations on the client in an attempt to make EQ "play nice" with other programs on your computer while you're multi-tasking. The more modern you OS, the less likely you are to need this program. If you are using Windows 7, you do not need this and will likely have more issues if you use it than not.

You can download EQPlaynice here. Not saying you should, but you should know it exists.

In general you shouldn't need EQPlaynice. Most people don't use it and they are just fine. Some people run it and have more troubles than not. However, if you experience lots of graphical lag on your computer while running the client, you might want to just grab this. This isn't the most-glowy recommendation I know, but results vary. Please note we are providing a special version meant for our aged client; other distributions probably will NOT work here.

I feel like this sounds crazy, but I don't have an eqw folder in my installation directory. I already two box with EQW, but I want to change my window switch key since I have trouble with ALT TAB. But there is no EQW folder in my directory, and, therefore, no eqw.ini.

Any ideas?

Edit: Wow. Found it at: C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\Shards of Dalaya\eqw

How did it get there?

Yeah, I love the props to the wiki, but whoever decided to put eqw in appdata with the new patcher is getting a frown from me for this. Updating the guide to reflect the change.

The AppData structure is lamer than lame. I understand *why* someone may have decided to do it, but it's just such a horrible place to put things. :(

I'm glad this popped up because I never knew about that shortcut to change between clients, I always just alt-tabbed. That looks like it would be MUCH faster and easier, saving a lot of time to make quick changes between each box.

yeah its an EQW function iirc. I assign it to one of my 'never used' mouse buttons to switch on the fly
