I'm looking to purchase a TV Tuner for my computer, so I can use it like tivo to record programs and watch them later, as well as burn shows to dvd's for later use. I would like to have one with a timer that I could set for various times and different channels. I already have a burner, but have no experience with using a TV Tuner. I have a cable modem and cable television.

What would I need to buy and what is recommended? I'm not a novice to computers so please provide anything you think is relevant.

Homebrew DVR, there are many programs for this actually, these may or may not be what you're looking for.

Media Portal - (Windows - but may not be too stable, or so I hear.)
Freevo - Looks decent, haven't explored it yet.
 
Looking for hardware before I look for software. Or would I not need any new hardware if I used one of those programs?
 
Well if you need hardware too, you may as well go with Hauppauge They're well known and liked, and provide hardware and software for the do it yourself DVR..er... :)
