Tried a lot, still stuck on files or hash table

Hey, folks. SoD suddenly stopped working on my main machine (Win XP SP2). It's happened before, and I can usually fix it. It's the thing where the patcher stops at "populating hash table" or "updating the file table."

But this time, I've done all the deleting and repatching that I can think of: files.txt, patchset, etc. I uninstalled and re-installed .NET 1.1, have tried repatching all and running it with EQW. This time I'm stumped. Oh, wait, didn't do the mss32.dll reinstallation.

Gah, still stops at populating hash table, after reinstalling the .dll. What else can I try to reinstall?

Oh, what kind of DXDiagnostic info should I post for my machine?

Thanks in advance.

this probably wont help you much, but when that happens to me ( and it does frequently ) i just re-patch, and let it sit for about 20min. Whatever happens in that time seems to work. I can log right back in. Its kind of upsetting when you are mid-group and cant log back in, but seems to be how the cards fall sometimes.

i randomly get this problem and it annoys me. i just download the patch files from the site as required and play with eqw to avoid the patcher. sorry that cant help you other then to say dont use the sodbin patcher.

If you close the patcher in the middle of "Updating the file table" it's going to hang the next time on "Populating hashtable." because it didn't finish writing out files.txt the last time. Try removing any extra files in your SoD directory, especialy large files like screenshots and log files, these will make the "Updating the files table" step take a lot longer.

Delete files.txt and try again. You'll have to delete files.txt everytime until you get past the "Updating the files table" step. This step reads each file in your SoD directory and creates an MD5 hash of the file for comparison against an MD5 hash of the file on the SoD update server to determine if your file is up to date. This step will take some time, and giant log files will make it take longer. Virus scanning software or a problem with your harddrive might cause this step to hang and never complete. Try disabling your virus scanning software before you run the patcher. If that doesn't work try a disk check (properties on your harddrive > Tools tab > "Check Now..." button).

Wow, good details, Wesell. Didn't realize that about large log files and screenshots, etc. Yeah, I have tons of crap in there. I'm using my laptop for tonight (which is a better machine anyway), but I don't always bring it home from work, so I"ll give it a shot tomorrow, and let you all know. Thanks.

I'll re-download the patcher, too - I knew there was one thing I was forgetting to try.

OK, re-did the patcher, deleted files.txt and patchset.txt, plus 38 screenshots and a bunch of old crap from {GAME} that ain't gonna be used anymore. Downloaded the patch files, but I'm going to let the thing sit on "Updating the file table" overnight, see what happens.

Gah, OK, still not working. 18 hours of "Updating the file table" didn't work ... So, I repatched, downloaded the patch zip file, loaded the minto the Game folder. I got nothin'.

Did a CHKDSK, repaired errors, the whole deal. Nada.

What a weird deal, I don't quite get why it would suddenly just stop working. I've done no updates, don't even run any anti-virus. Guess I could load up Spybot or something, but there's no other behavior on this machine to suggest that I have anything going on. No Windows firewall ... oh, wait. I did set up a home network on this machine, and stupidly went through the Wizard, which did turn on the firewall. But, I turned that off a couple of days ago. Wonder if there's a setting somewhere that I missed?

Would Windows firewall stop the file list from getting updated?

Edit: Oh, and using EQW doesn't help, either.

Oh, oh my. Fixed it.

It was quite easy in the end, but so glaringly obvious that I hadn't noticed. Turned on Internet Explorer to go to my company's web mail access. Kept getting DNS errors ... then I remembered that SoD uses IE's settings ... CRAP! I had put on a proxy server when I was on our VPN so I could browse the Internet a few days ago. Hadn't turned it off, but I rarely use Explorer at home, so I hadn't noticed. Unchecked the proxy, fired up SoD patcher, and off it goes. Dang. Thanks for the help, at least!
