Top DPS class?

What is normally the top dps class in raids here? Usually a close toss up between rogues and wizards but i dont know how stuff works here

I've personally seen a wizard (between 50 - 52) bring down a single target in 2 casts (about 6 seconds)... Not sure how much dps a rogue can do but when i saw the wizard land a 4,963 cast I nearlyed laid an egg! I said whoa, thats nice and he said not really he sometimes gets in the 6k range (per cast!)...

On a raid, it's between the rogue and wizard. If there is an Enchanter with GoG, the rogue will most likely win. Another factor is the mob. Rogue will most likely lose against a mob that does whirlwind, and a wizard will definately lose against a mob that counterspells a lot. Comparing the two though, a long fight a rogue will usually win, a short fight a wizard will usually win.

Not Rogue. Rogue dps kinda leveled off while wizards have continued to gain on damage output(through ever expanding mana pools).

Just to clarify. There is a difference between DPS and Damage. A wizards mana pool increasing isn't going to directly increase his DPS.

Rogue dps has continued to gain on damage output(through ever upgrading weapons). There is still yet to be a rogue with the 18 damage dagger.

I prefer to break it down differently, Derek.

The top DPS classes are:
Necro
Mage
Wizard
Rogue
Ranger

Each excels in something different. Each will be ideal in certain situations. You can't say that just one is the most... you would have to know the situation.

Well, their dps remains the same but average dps over time increases as the role of burst dps becomes less and less apparent

A wizards mana pool increasing isn't going to directly increase his DPS.

A wizard with a larger mana pool does not have to hold back to conserve said mana, so he can afford to cast more nukes in say, a minutes time. (In a raid situation, of course) Needless to say, a wizard will put out the highest DPS numbers on your average fight, but that does not make them the most sought after DPS class.

Please note how I italicized the word "directly." I worded my original statement carefully for a reason.

We're still just scratching the surface of DPS. What needs to be kept in mind is the relativity of the concept. You can't just say one class is the most dps.

I think a more specific question needs to be asked, otherwise It would take me literally 3 pages to fully break down the concepts.

In general, what most people see is the wizards and rogues. I'm not going to endorse that they are the highest. They are the most easily parseable :p.

on our raids rogues are ussually top dps but then again its the rogues parsing the dps so you never know how hard they are cheating their numbers =p.

Most fights we do are against mobs that have high resists wich limits the wizards somewhat.

For a frame of reference, my general idea of how classes potential for DPS (not including buffing others' DPS) should be ordered:

1: Rogue (Sustained master), Wizard (Burst master, decent to good sustained)

2: Monk, Ranger, Magician, Necromancer

3: Warrior, Druid, Beastlord

4: Knights, Shaman, Cleric, Enchanter, Bard

On scale of DPS reliance... note that this isn't ordered by how good the class is at it, only how much of its DPS is on which end of the scale.

BURST ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUSTAINED
Wizard | Druid Enchanter | Magician Cleric | Shaman Necromancer | Ranger Shadowknight Paladin | Beastlord Bard | Warrior Monk Rogue

This is a very old quote, so not so accurate nowadays.

Paladins and necromancer should probably be a rank above, bard too maybe ?

I can't parse necro and casters well when I just play Yona. I can't parse dots from beastlords/bards too. Still Rogues/wizards are usually TOP DPS (ranger/mage/monk are #1 sometime too).

Parsing suggests mages are not 2nd btw, and in a goodly bit of cases beaten by wizard, monk, rogue, necro, and ranger.
