Tome of the Mind

Can anyone please explain to me EXACTLY what this tome gives you.

I have read the description within and it has left me confused (but then most things do).

Any assistance appreciated.

  • It increases your IN/WIS cap by 10 per rank of the tome.
  • If your INt/WIS is high enough to benefit from this increase, you get +1% crit nuke chance (INT) / +1% crit heal chance (WIS). If you have a high enough score on both attributes, you get both boni.

I remember reading that Critical Evocation doesn't help bards atm,
does tome of the mind work for bard songs as well or would it just help procs.

Surely there must be more to it than that - is it really just a crappy version of crit evocation?

Technically it is better, as someone could benefit from both and it stacks. Functionally however this is extremely unlikely to happen for casters or healers. I'm not sure whether any hybrids meet the requirements for getting both bonuses, but it's probably more likely. So basically, yes it ends up being one or the other usually.

It's actually a better version of crit evoc, cause it also affects heals. And keep in mind that this and crit evoc stack!

The codex states:-

This codex allows you to gain additional hidden benefits from your INT and WIS stats beyond your stat cap. Each rank of this codex raises the hidden cap by 20.
You get an additional 1% chance to score a critical damage spell for every 20 overcap points 0f INT and an additional 1% chance to score a crit heal for every 20
overcap points pf WIS.

(1) How can benefits be hidden?
(2) Why are benefits plural?
(3) The cap on INT and WIS are not hidden
(4) If the cap (hidden or otherwise) is raised I would expect to get the normal benefits for INT/WIS below this new cap.
(5) The reference to "for every 20 overcap points" suggests that if you have 40 overcap int you get 2% additional crit chance. But why refer to raising the cap and then to overcap points.
(6) What exactly is your cap. Does it depend on whether you have done the AA's to raise it?
(7) Can I get a crit on my mage pet heal by getting my wisdom high enough?

I am still totally confused by this.

Can I suggest a rewrite of the description to correspond with whatever this tome actually does do.

(1) Hidden as in they are there, but client doesn't show them.
(2) Uh, +healcrit and +damagecrit are 2 benefits, so plural seems right here.
(3) I wondered about this as well, INT and WIS do not benefit from the hidden strength AA and thus have no hidden cap. I figured it was just a bad formulation.
(4) No stat does the same it did pre hidden cap post hidden cap. So why would you expect INT/WIS to be different?
(5) Again, bad formulation. Essentially this tome gives you a 20 points hidden cap per rank of the tome. To get the actual benefits of the hidden cap, you obviously need a high enough ability score. So if you have an INT/WIS of <random high number> but only done Tome of the Mind I, only 20 of these points help you. Once you have finished Tome of the Mind II, another 20 will help you, for a total of 4o points. Any points above what is covered by tomes have no effect at all.
(6) Cap for INT/WIS is 355 after doing all AAs to raise it. All other stats cap at 305, but are affected by hidden strength AA, wich raises their hidden cap to 485.
(7) Theoretically yes, but good luck on amassing that much WIS on an INTcaster.

(1) How can benefits be hidden?
Because they don't show up on your character sheet. See hidden strength. This is not new terminology in this game.

(2) Why are benefits plural?
Because its a different benefit for the int and wis like it says.

(3) The cap on INT and WIS are not hidden
It is with this. See hidden strength.

(4) If the cap (hidden or otherwise) is raised I would expect to get the normal benefits for INT/WIS below this new cap.
That is not how it works for hidden stamina.

(5) The reference to "for every 20 overcap points" suggests that if you have 40 overcap int you get 2% additional crit chance. But why refer to raising the cap and then to overcap points.
Because with 1 tome you are still capped at 1% since it only raises you by 20. Its letting you know that further tome levels increase that further.

(6) What exactly is your cap. Does it depend on whether you have done the AA's to raise it?
Precisely, hence why its a hidden cap.

(7) Can I get a crit on my mage pet heal by getting my wisdom high enough?
Yes, thats exactly whats written.
