This guide is for The Dream and therefore is targeted at new players. Each section references the screenshot found below it. It is not mirrored on the wiki because it breaks wiki-rules for addressing the reader and using first person. Though I may rewrite for the wiki a some point, I'm sick of us not having this guide anymore in any form. This is based on Wiz's screenshot guide to the guide.
All new characters begin in the Dream. The first thing you will want to do is take a look at your UI. This is the default UI - I have pressed Alt+W to bring up the Window Selector and moved the Hot Buttons bar (Alt+M) to the side.
You can move with your arrow keys. Alt+O will give you access to options, including keybinds (useful to just review what keys do what!)
In the upper left going down the side you will see Player Info box, Target Info box, Group info box.
In the bottom left is the Spell bar (not used by manaless classes: Rogue, Monk, Warrior) which has a little red book that works as a shortcut to the Spellbook. Next to the bar is the Main Chat window - right clicking on this window will let you create new windows which you can filter channels into, name, fade and reposition.
In the upper center is the compass - the compass is COMPLETELY UNRELIABLE without skilling up Sense Heading. This also changes the + on the map to an arrow which shows player heading. It is common for players to bind Sense Heading to direction keys until it has skilled up, but that won't be covered here.
In the upper right of my screen are the Effects and Songs displays - they are indiviual boxes which can be resized (and will likely need to be expanded slightly before they will display anything!) and fade out when not in focus by default.
In the lower right of the screen is the Hot Button menu. This menu contains access to ability and social buttons as well, but for now we will just use the Hot Keys available. The community wiki has an excellent guide for creating your own Hot Keys to put on your Hot Button bar.
Approach The Guide and target him. You will see that the Target Ring around him is red, as well as the background of his Target Box. This indicates that he is many levels above you.
You will want to hail The Guide. Hail = Hello in our modern vonacular. To hail The Guide, either type /say hail or simply press the H key. Read what he has to say to you (in white) and what you can say back to him (in yellow.) This is the most common way of interacting with friendly NPCs. To respond, /cm d# using the number associated with the sentence. You may also type out the line in /say, as with hail.
Speak with the guide as you with and he will send you on to the Challenges. You will recieve 100 experience, and then several lines of information will be given. It can feel like a bit much, but read everything! In this case, you are told how to access your quest journal (which is not done through menus here) and how experience works.)
He will also buff you with Power of Dreams. It will appear in your Effects display. If you do not see it, grab the edge of the display box and enlarge is slightly. Mousing over the image will show the name of the buff. The blue border indicates that this buff is Beneficial.
From The Guide, you will need to see out the trials. This zone has a very simple layout, but this is a good chance to check out your map! Press Backspace. To get an overview of the zone, mouse over the map and use your mousewheel to zoom out. If you do not have a mouse wheel or you are on a laptop or you really love clicking buttons, you may use the zoom out button in the map interface.
Follow the map forward until you come to The Challenge (appearance and gender will vary.) Once you tell her you are prepared to fight to the death, you will be able to attack her! Beat her down with autoattack - you can press the Melee Attack in the Hot Button menu, bound to key 1 by default. Once her face meets the floor, you can move on!
Manaless classes will recieve a clicky rock from The Sorcerer - simply target The Sorcerer and right click the rock to complete her trial.
Other classes will need to scribe the spell they are given into their spell books, and then put the spell onto their spellbars. How to do this is described ingame! Putting the spell in the first slot of your spellbar will also put it on your Hot Buttons on key 3 by default (so you can cast it by pushing 3). Target the Sorcerer and cast the spell to complete her trial.
A dream skunk has recently started hanging out in the Dream down the trail from the Sorcerer, and he'll spray you with SkunkSpray. You'll see it appear in your effects bar. Mousing of the image will show the name, and it's red border indicates that this effect is Detrimental.
Just up the road you will meet The Healer. As the ingame note describes, you will also find a Healer in major cities. Speak with this healer and he can cleanse you of the skunk funk.
Time for the last trial, given by The Choice. You will get A Gift - try holding alt and clicking on the item to see details about it as shown in the screenshot.
Near The Choice are three other NPCs. Speak to them all to learn their stories and how chosing each will effect your alignment. You MUST speak with all of them before you can make a choice.
Alignment influences favor from your diety. Some characters will have their diety pre-selected (Paladins, Shadowknights, and all Frogloks) while most will be able to select their deity.
Once you have decided who to give the give the gift to, speak with them again and tell them that you have chosen them. Then open your inventory and put the A Gift on your cursor and click on the chosen person to open the Give window. Before clicking Give ALWAYS check the name at the top - don't give your charm money to the charm trader, don't give your armor to your pets!
After you have given away the gift, speak with The Choice again to complete the trial so you can continue.
With the trials complete, it is time to move to the final area. Find the entrance on your map!
Speak with the people in the Stone Henge area - They are numbered! They will give you lots of goodies, but you need to speak with them in order. When you speak to The Last you will be given a two books and a Mysterious Summons, and your journal will be updated with the Mysterious Summons quest - that is the Main Quest, and you will want to hang onto the summons until you have completed that portion of the quest and it is always a good idea to have the books (though they can be referenced on the wiki now.)
You can continue speaking with The Last to wake up in your home city. You will no longer have the clicky stone/spell you recieved from The Sorcerer or the Power of Dreams buff you recieved from The Guide, but the items you recieved from The First through The Last will remain with you.
