Suggested replacement for Monster Summoning

As the devs have stated that the line of Monster Summoning spells won't be implemented, I've been giving some thought to what would be a reasonable replacement for that spell line. Given that all mage pets are elemental type mobs, that we have quite a few nukes devoted strictly to summoned creatures and an AA line just for summoned opponents my suggestion is to replace Monster Summoning I-IV with a single target, summoned only, mesmerize. Set the max level of the mez at spell level -1 or -2. Necros are the masters of the undead yet their mez works on all mob types, giving mages a summoned only mez doesn't seem overpowered.

Mesmerize is a class defining ability, I don't like this idea simply because it makes magicians a far better class than they would be if they could use monster summoning, at level 65 I highly doubt you'd be able to use monster summoning to create a pet better than relic, so it seems to me it's just a novelty spell and not something that would be utilized as much as a mesmerize.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
 
A lot of mages will never (or seems like it to me) see a relic pet. And I'm suggesting a mez that would ONLY work on elementals. Similar to how the necro mez SHOULD only work on undead (but works on all types).
 
Ele-only mez seems fine in principle, but wouldn't it make more sense to replace monster summoning with something of similar nature to monster summoning?
 
how bout a short duration pet which lasts 30 seconds with a recast time of 3-5 mins, you can cast this while other pet out and use it as another dps weapon which only attacks the target you have selected

Wouldn't be to overpowered I think. After all there aren't that many elementals in the game.

The most dangerous thing on live? A freshly ebayed character.

The 2nd most dangerous thing on live? A mage in BoT with CotAM mem'd (Call of the Arch Mage is the 65 mage charm spell).

I feel it was a major mistake on the part of "company" to suddenly spring a charm spell on a class at 65 that had had NO experience with charming until they mem'd that spell. Handling charmed pets takes skill, a lot of practice and the right tools for the job. All the other classes that get a charm also get a mez and/or snare. Getting charm without at least one of those is just begging, pleading and praying to all that is (un)holy to send you more trouble than you can handle.
 
I'd prefer to replace it with a pet specific summoned item, call them Elemental Focus items maybe. They might have a level of Companion Strength or Companion Health, or invent new focuses like Companion Frenzy (pet frenzies when at 30% or less health), Companion Skill (pet has small chance to Riposte), etc. Nothing that balance-altering, I'm sure the devs can tune the percentages so the items are useful but not overpowering.
 
Monster Summoning only seemed like a fun spell, like voice graft, with no reason to be there other than flavor. So I'd suggest replacing it with something else that's fun. Or maybe even a mildly useful spell, attunded to each elemental to give them a little extra reminder that they're just mindless servants. Cast on fire pets it becomes a "Furnace" effect, allowing you to give them regular and mastercrafted weapons, and in return they melt it down and return iron ore to you. Cast on the water pet it becomes a "Soap" effect so that he can give you a bath which grants you a temporary +10 charisma boost. Cast on the Earth Elemental and it becomes a pressure of a great volcano, allowing you to give the pet a lump of coal and turn it into a diamond after a couple years, or maybe you can plant a nice vegetable garden in him. The air pet could have gentle breeze effect that acts as a +1 mana regen that hits the whole group.

Or... we can change Monster Summoning into "Elemental Awakening' which causes the pet to become sentient and start backtalking the mage and trash talking the mage's group. And he'll also start naming himself since mages are clearly incapable of creating good names for the elementals which they regularly humiliate.


Silliness aside, the monster summoning line isn't going to make or break the mage. Even if it weren't implemented or changed at all, the mages wouldn't suffer in the slightest.
 
monster summoning spell pets are actually quite superior to your standard pets, at least when i could use them they were. Of course once you get that next spell set with a pet in it that pet will be better than the last MS you had, I beleive they were used to give a little boost to pet vs mob strength in between spell levels or some such.
 
As was pointed out in another thread, mage mana regen is well behind that of the other classes. What about replacing Monster Summoning with a line of pet canni? It could be either a HoT-style mana regen or an instant-type (not necessarily instant cast) mana regen in exchange for pets HP.

Just tossing out suggestions.
 
I wouldn't mind seeing something that would hammer home the concept that the mage is a pet class/summoner more than anything else.

The summon monster spells may have a use for the levels before you get new summoned spells, but they aren't that vital to the class to require legitimate replacement with a completely new spell chain, in my opinion. Sure, it would be nice, but since mages are obviously not broken as-is, replacing these spells with something that doesn't have a direct impact on a mage's survivability or utility wouldn't do any harm.

A few spells that exist for fun or utility would be nice, some ideas I've had include (and I make no claims for balance or quality, these are just things I've thought of the past day or so, some of them would probably be a bad idea to implement):

Pet HoT Spells

Pet Buff Spells for AC, HP, and/or Resists

Pet Grow Spell (Huge Companion to counter Tiny Companion, it would be fun/funny or just something to keep you from being entirely bored when you can't get a group)

Voice Graft equivalent

Mass Bandage Summons (100/cast), Mass Arrow and Throwing Dagger Summons (100/cast, again)

"Bag of Provisions" Summon that creates a bag with food, drink, bandages, a coldstone, arrows and throwing daggers

More types of summoned weapons (2h slashing, 2h piercing, hand to hand)

Summoned alcohol, party items (spin the bottle!), etc.

Pet sacrifice spells, cast a spell that causes your pet to die in exchange for some nice effect (probably need a long cooldown on pet resummon to keep from being OH EXPLOITABLE).

Pet frenzy spells that give a powerful short-term boost to pet combat prowess while draining hit points and causing them to die at the end of the duration.

A summoned expendible invisbility item similar to levitation rings or mod rods.

I could probably think of a few more ideas given some time.
 
This spell was essentially a novelty spell - it should probably be replaced by a similar type of spell, Summon: Pet Moustache or something.
