Stop: c0000218 error

I wonder if anyone can shed some light on this. My computer has never done this before, and it only happens while running SoD. After about 30 minutes of play, my computer locks up completely and the display goes black. No combination of keystrokes seems to reawaken the system. So I reset the computer, and get a BSOD Stop: c0000218 - The registry cannot load the hive file \systemroot\system32\config\software. this happens *every* time I run SoD.

I'm running Win XP Pro SP2. The only other programs running at each of these times were Zone Alarm, and AVG. All windows patches are installed, all drivers are current.

Hardware:
Asus A7V266-E
Athlon 1900+
GeForce 6600
200GB HD

I keep good backups, so I can just reinstall a recent image without any important data loss. Still, this is terribly annoying. Any ideas/thoughts?

You should try updating your drivers. It might be an error in there that they have fixed in a later release.

It sounds to me like you either have a corrupted windows installation or you have a bad hard drive potentially. If you don't want to or can't do a format and a re-install of your computer, reboot your computer into Safe Mode Command Prompt ... type: chkdsk
and let that run through ... if you want it to just auto fix you can run chkdsk /f
After that completes reboot back into windows and see if that makes a difference. If not you have to restore your registry, or rebuild it. You could also boot your computer from your XP disk and run a repair of your OS, but you will have to re-apply all your patches and security updates. Only do these other options though if the check disk doesn't solve the problem. Good luck!
