Starting up again, and...

Wylie

Dalayan Beginner
Hey everyone, this is Wylie the Shaman, I'm not sure if any of you remember me, but I played a bit during the Velious/Odus glory days and go to the mid 30's. I'm going to start back up again with a friend of mine, and I can't deide whether to make a new Ranger, play my level 16 Cleric, or my 34 shaman. I'm more partial to the idea of a ranger, are they in need atm? And is there any place my shaman can get some decent gear for him to start up with?

If Rangers are really not needed, then which of the two, Cleric or SHaman should i play?

Anyway, thanks in advance for the advice.

-Wylie

Rangers are always in need. In fact, we are the only class uber enough to be used in the U.S. military=)

U.S. Army Rangers are among the most elite, if not the most elite, combat soldiers in the world. Being a Ranger is a function of attitude and state of mind, as well as a matter of skill and training. It is the fraternity of a highly select group within the profession of arms that few will attempt to join and into which even fewer will be initiated. To be a Ranger is a mark of excellence indicating a degree of success that few will achieve. The challenge of being a Ranger is to prove your ability to lead and command while undergoing significant mental, emotional, and physical stress. For those who have mastered this challenge, the coveted title of "Ranger" is their reward.

Hehe, thanks for the glory speech, it further tempts me to play a ranger, however, do you have an answer to the other question per chance?

I could especially use some info on where to find a decent bow.

I will say this much, of the 3 classes you mention (SHM, CLR, RNG), the shaman and ranger are two of the most played classes on the server by far. It seems like a hybrid server for the most part with a large void as far as plate classes go. I only speak for the pre-raid scene however. If you were going to start up, I would pick a cleric of those 3 if you are looking for someone in higher demand. However, demand is one thing, and enjoying your class is another, so that's your call. If you really want to travel the road less traveled then make a bard since they are an endangered species on SOD.

(BTW, shamans are also very common.)

I completely agree, and thats why I think I'm going for ranger, because I've always loved then in eqlive, but never really got anywhere with 'em, maybe it'll happen this time.

Thanks for the advice everyone, just need to find me a good bow now :p

Army aside, rangers blow goats. You'd be better off removing your kneecaps with a dull, rusty spork than playing a ranger. Not only are they terrible, but everyone hates them. Everyone. Even Jesus.

Of course, this is all based on my main exposure to rangers: Tapein. I suspect he's par for the course, though.

You, sir, need to broaden your horizons. Would you want all Paladins to be judged based on Balthor?!?!?!

ROFL rangers tanks, man they are so delusional...

and about Army rangers, they are not the most elites, Marines Reconnance are point period end of discussion, BTW they train the army rangers.

Now I dont think rangers are bad, they got nice DPS among other useful skills like tracking and whatnots(except Qwai, don't listen to him, he sucks), I do suggest a SK/monk they are great for any duo since single pulling.

Also consider a druid, they can heal well and do some buffs and port which makes it a plus on this server. Else go for shammy for uber DPS buffage and slows.

Rangers are one of the more fun classes to play, despite some downfalls, there isn't much they cant do, but there is not much they excel at either.

Yea, Yaladwen knows the true extent of a super archer's skills

Not to mention our pure melee might !!! Check the sig!

For those of you who think rangers cant tank: Rangers are great tanks in the end game. I tank lots of nameds one grouped (and duod), and sometimes am a backup tank on raids when the MT goes down (Prison, PoT, etc). Of course, ranger raid tanking isnt planned, but hey we've pulled it off. So, dont mock rangers - we can be great tanks.

Rangers are also great dps as they get AA's and gear, both in melee and bows.

Anyone can tank, really. Its a matter of who can tank well.

But yes, a ranger can usually get the job done, if required.
